Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian declared on Saturday that the country would remain steadfast and would never agree to surrender, amid escalating military tensions following new Israeli airstrikes. These attacks, involving 80 fighter jets, targeted significant sites in Tehran including a military academy, an underground command center, and a missile storage facility, resulting in a fire at Mehrabad International Airport, one of the main airports serving the capital.

In a defiant address aired on state television, Pezeshkian seemed to respond directly to comments made by US President Donald Trump, who stated that only Iran’s “unconditional surrender” could bring an end to the hostilities. “Iran’s enemies must take their wish for the unconditional surrender of the Iranian people to their graves,” Pezeshkian asserted.

Meanwhile, Iran demonstrated its retaliatory capabilities by launching air raid alerts and causing explosions in areas above Jerusalem as well as major Gulf cities like Dubai and Manama. Reports indicated that Saudi Arabia successfully intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at a military base housing US personnel. As a result, operations at Dubai airport, the busiest for international traffic, were briefly suspended due to heightened tensions.

The conflict, which began last Saturday following coordinated Israeli and US airstrikes that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has significantly escalated and now extends beyond Iranian borders, impacting countries such as Lebanon, Cyprus, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Even the waters off Sri Lanka have seen US forces sinking an Iranian warship with a torpedo.

The toll of the conflict on civilians is profound, with Iranian authorities reporting 926 civilian deaths and approximately 6,000 injuries, figures that have not been independently verified. The situation has caused widespread panic among residents in the capital, forcing many to confront the traumatic realities of warfare. “I don’t think anyone who hasn’t experienced war would understand it,” said a young teacher from Tehran, highlighting the anxiety permeating daily life.

The fighting has also intensified in Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes have resulted in at least 217 deaths, according to local health officials. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has warned of an impending humanitarian crisis as over 300,000 people have been displaced due to combat operations.

The repercussions of the conflict are reverberating through global markets, with stock prices dropping and crude oil prices surging amid fears of an increasingly drawn-out confrontation. Analysts have noted that there appears to be no immediate resolution in sight, as officials from both the US and Israel suggest that the conflict could extend for a month or longer.

In a recent statement, Trump reiterated his stance on dealings with Iran, insisting that there would be no negotiations unless Iran agrees to surrender unconditionally. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that the president’s commitment is to ensure Iran no longer poses a threat, which essentially means that the country would end up in a position of surrender, whether acknowledged by Iran or not.

On international relations, Iran’s UN ambassador emphasized that the choice of successors to leadership would solely be determined by Iran and not influenced by foreign powers, directly countering Trump’s suggestion of facilitating a new leadership in Tehran.

While escalating tensions have engaged multiple nations in the region, traditional allies of Iran, such as Russia and China, have largely refrained from direct involvement in the conflict. President Vladimir Putin reportedly expressed support for an immediate ceasefire during a call with Pezeshkian, while US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the US is closely monitoring potential Russian intelligence support to Iran.

The ongoing conflict continues to claim lives, including six US service members, prompting a somber transfer ceremony for their remains at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. As the situation unfolds, millions remain anxious about the broader implications of this war, both regionally and globally.
