Australia Raises Concerns After Chinese Helicopter Intercepts Military Aircraft

Australia’s military reported on Friday that a Chinese navy helicopter engaged in risky maneuvers near an Australian aircraft during a routine operation in the Yellow Sea, an act that Beijing labeled a “provocation.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday, as confirmed by both nations, over open waters situated between China and the Korean peninsula. Australia’s defense ministry expressed its concerns to Beijing following the close encounter involving the frigate HMAS Toowoomba, which was conducting standard military activities at the time.

According to the Australian department, a helicopter from HMAS Toowoomba was intercepted by a helicopter from the People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N). The encounter involved the Chinese helicopter matching the altitude of the Australian Defense Force (ADF) helicopter and flying dangerously close. The Australian defense ministry noted that the PLA-N aircraft not only closed in to an unsafe distance but also increased its speed and executed a roll maneuver towards the ADF helicopter, forcing it to take evasive action to ensure safety.

In its official statement, Australia emphasized its expectation that all nations, including China, should conduct military operations safely and professionally.

In response, the Chinese military dismissed Australia’s account, claiming it was a “complete distortion of facts.” A spokesperson for China’s defense ministry accused the HMAS Toowoomba of engaging in close reconnaissance activities while ostensibly implementing UN Security Council resolutions. The spokesperson characterized the Australian vessel’s actions as persistent provocations that jeopardize China’s national security, alleging that it has deployed its helicopters for such reconnaissance missions in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea on multiple occasions.

China maintained that its military operations were a legitimate response to these perceived infringements and were conducted in compliance with international law. Additionally, Beijing cautioned Australia that it would implement “countermeasures” against activities that threaten its security.

The Chinese spokesperson urged the Australian government to respect China’s sovereignty and security concerns, to cease the spread of false information, and to refrain from any further risky or provocative actions that might destabilize the region.
