Indian Army's Southern Command Hosts Event on Drone Technology and Defense Systems

The Battle Axe Division of the Indian Army’s Southern Command recently hosted an industry-academia event centering on drone technology and emerging defense systems. This initiative attracted over 50 participants, including representatives from technology companies, universities, and various branches of the Indian Army, signaling a significant collaborative effort to bridge the gap between military needs and academic innovation.

The primary goal of the event was to foster connections between military requirements and ongoing research in academic institutions, as well as the capabilities of the defense industry. Themes of discussion included advancements in unmanned aerial systems, counter-drone solutions, and a range of other military technologies essential for enhancing national security.

Key discussions also delved into the training requirements necessary to cultivate the technical skills needed for effective implementation of these emerging capabilities. Participants were encouraged to share insights and expertise, which could lead to the development of new indigenous defense equipment tailored to the specific needs of the Indian military.

The timing of this initiative aligns with India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military and bolster its domestic defense industry. In a related move, Indian officials made progress in March on renewing the Indian Air Force’s tactical transport fleet. The Defence Procurement Board has approved a plan to acquire 60 new transport aircraft, with an estimated budget of approximately $10.9 billion. This acquisition is set to follow the government’s “Buy and Make” model, combining international sourcing with local production to strengthen indigenous capabilities.

Adding to this momentum, the Indian Ministry of Defence recently issued a request for information regarding the Expendable Aerial Target Next Generation. This program aims to develop drones that can replicate the flight patterns of fast, low-flying anti-ship missiles, providing a crucial training tool for naval air defense exercises. Unlike their reusable counterparts, these expendable drones are designed to be destroyed during training, thereby allowing naval units to practice under conditions that more closely mirror real operational threats.

Together, these efforts reflect India’s commitment to advancing its military technology landscape and ensuring that it remains at the forefront of defense innovation in a rapidly evolving global environment.
