Shield AI has revealed its strategy to enhance its autonomous systems portfolio through the acquisition of Aechelon Technology, a technology firm based in California. Aechelon specializes in creating advanced simulation and synthetic environments that are utilized by the U.S. military and allied forces for crew training and evaluation of sophisticated airborne systems, particularly within the Pentagon’s Joint Simulation Environment.
The acquisition is expected to bolster Shield AI’s flagship Hivemind AI autonomy software. The company believes that integrating Aechelon’s capabilities will significantly accelerate Hivemind’s development through enhanced simulation processes. Hivemind has demonstrated its versatility by successfully piloting over 20 different platforms since its launch, including F-16 jets, unmanned aerial systems, and robotic ground vehicles. Additionally, it has been recognized by the U.S. Air Force as a mission autonomy provider for the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program, which focuses on manned-unmanned airborne teamwork, and is currently engaged in flight testing.
Following the acquisition, Aechelon will maintain its independence within the Shield AI framework. CEO Ignacio Sanz-Pastor will continue to lead Aechelon, reporting directly to Shield AI CEO Gary Steele. Steele expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, “The acquisition of Aechelon will accelerate the work we are doing with Hivemind. It’s an incredible company with a fantastic team and a leading technology that plays a role in how we think about the AI pilot development lifecycle.”
In conjunction with the acquisition announcement, Shield AI successfully raised $1.5 billion, achieving a valuation of $12.7 billion. This round was spearheaded by Advent International and co-led by JPMorganChase’s Security and Resiliency Initiative, with an additional $500 million in preferred equity secured from Blackstone, which has also committed a further $250 million in a delayed draw facility aimed at supporting future growth initiatives.
The proceeds from this funding are earmarked for financing the upcoming Aechelon acquisition, further developing the Hivemind software, and advancing the company’s X-BAT vertical takeoff and landing combat drone technology.
