In a significant advancement for defense procurement, the Indian Army has finalized its first capital acquisition contract via the Government e-Marketplace (GeM), indicating a major transformation in its procurement strategies. This historic agreement with JCB India Ltd involves the supply of 93 telescopic handlers under the “Buy (Indian)” category, with a total investment of ₹25.90 crore.
This landmark decision highlights the Army’s commitment to embracing a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven platform for capital procurement, a process that has typically been cumbersome and protracted. By utilizing GeM, the Army aims to dramatically shorten procurement timelines while upholding mandatory procedures and ensuring institutional integrity.
Officials emphasized that this initiative lays the groundwork for quicker and more streamlined acquisition processes, especially for essential equipment in logistics and support roles. The procurement of these telescopic handlers is poised to bolster the Army’s material handling and logistics capabilities in diverse operational scenarios, including high-altitude and field environments.
Furthermore, this development aligns with the Government’s initiative for Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defense, promoting increased participation from domestic industries in fulfilling the armed forces’ equipment requirements.
The successful execution of this contract is expected to set a benchmark for future capital procurements through GeM, reinforcing principles of efficiency, transparency, and indigenization within India’s defense acquisition framework.
