US and Iran Hold Indirect Talks in Oman, Pledge Further Negotiations

NATO Chief Mark Rutte is scheduled to meet with former President Donald Trump next week during a visit to Washington, amid rising tensions concerning the alliance’s response to the ongoing conflict in Iran. This meeting comes as Trump has openly criticized NATO, suggesting he might consider withdrawing the U.S. from the military alliance, which has existed for 77 years.

The former president’s discontent stems from what he perceives as inadequate support from European nations regarding U.S. military operations. Trump has specifically pointed out that NATO member countries are limiting access for American forces to military bases on their territories. He has also expressed frustration over the coalition’s failure to take the lead in securing the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway crucial for global oil shipments.

According to NATO, Rutte’s discussions with Trump will take place on April 8. His itinerary includes meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Rutte is also expected to deliver a speech on April 9 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation Institute.

Having previously served as the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Rutte has gained a reputation as a “Trump whisperer.” This moniker reflects his adeptness in navigating his relationship with the former president, particularly during various international crises since returning to office last year. Rutte has argued that Trump’s administration has inadvertently strengthened NATO, as it has pushed European nations to increase their defense spending commitments.
