In a landmark development for India’s defense sector, GE Aerospace has revealed plans to set up a dedicated engine repair facility in India specifically for the HAL Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. This initiative aims to significantly boost the operational readiness of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and streamline maintenance processes for the aircraft.

The new facility will concentrate on the maintenance and repair of the F404-IN20 engines, which are the power source for the Tejas Mk1A jets. In a collaborative effort, the plant will be owned and operated by the IAF, while GE Aerospace will provide essential technical expertise, training, support personnel, and specialized equipment.

This strategic move is poised to bring numerous benefits: it will eliminate the IAF’s reliance on overseas repair facilities, thereby significantly reducing turnaround times for engine servicing. As a result, the fleet’s availability and combat readiness are expected to improve dramatically.

The announcement comes at a crucial time when the Tejas program is grappling with delivery delays in engine supplies. Under a 2021 contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), GE was supposed to provide 99 F404-IN20 engines; however, only a small number have been delivered thus far. This shortfall has created setbacks in the induction timeline for the Tejas Mk1A jets, which were originally scheduled for delivery in 2024 but are now anticipated to start arriving around mid-2026.

The importance of the Tejas program cannot be overstated, as it plays a vital role in replacing the IAF’s ageing fleets, including the MiG-21 and Jaguar aircraft. With the current squadron strength falling short of desired levels, the timely induction and maintenance of indigenous fighters have become crucial for maintaining operational efficacy.
