In a significant escalation within the ongoing conflict, the Lebanese army reported that two of its soldiers sustained injuries from a targeted Israeli strike while they were conducting a rescue operation in southern Lebanon. This incident marks the first confirmed targeting of Lebanese military personnel since a ceasefire was established between the two nations.
According to the statement released by the Lebanese army, the soldiers were part of a patrol accompanied by civil defense personnel and civilian bulldozers in the town of Majdal Zoun when the Israeli strike occurred. The operations were aimed at rescuing civilians in the area.
In a related update, Lebanon’s civil defense authorities disclosed that three rescuers became trapped under rubble following the airstrike, and ongoing efforts are being made to reach them. The situation remains precarious as the region grapples with the aftermath of widespread violence.
Despite the ceasefire, Israel conducted extensive airstrikes across southern Lebanon on the same day, countering claims of peace following the truce that took effect on April 17. These strikes involved intense demolition operations within a declared “yellow line” area, where the Israeli military has advised Lebanese residents against returning.
Hezbollah, the powerful militant group active in the region, responded to the developments by announcing operations targeting Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, further complicating the fragile situation.
As the violence continues, the humanitarian toll escalates. The Lebanese health ministry has reported that the death toll since the conflict began on March 2 has reached 2,534 individuals, underscoring the urgent need for renewed discussions on peace and conflict resolution in the region.
