Indonesia and Japan Sign Defense Cooperation Agreement Amid Regional Tensions

The defense ministers of Indonesia and Japan formalized a cooperation agreement on Monday, emphasizing the importance of regional peace and stability amid ongoing global uncertainties. This agreement was signed during the visit of Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi to Jakarta, marking a significant step forward in the defense relationship between the two nations.

The accord follows Japan’s recent decision to relax its long-standing arms export restrictions, enabling Japanese companies to sell lethal weapons to countries with which Japan has established defense agreements. Indonesian defense ministry spokesman Rico Ricardo Sirait stated that this initiative aims to enhance collaborative defense efforts between Indonesia and Japan.

The agreement encompasses several key areas, including joint exercises, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief operations, and maritime cooperation. Furthermore, it is set to foster opportunities for collaboration in defense equipment and technology, with a strong emphasis on maintaining regional stability.

Since taking office in 2024, President Prabowo Subianto has been advocating for the modernization of Indonesia’s aging military. Koizumi commented on the significance of the defense partnership with Indonesia, asserting that it would contribute positively to the overall peace and stability of the region amidst an increasingly complex international landscape.

Following his discussions with Indonesia’s Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Koizumi is scheduled to head to the Philippines, where Japanese forces are participating in a joint military exercise that also involves the United States.

In a broader context, Indonesia recently finalized a defense cooperation agreement with the United States, strengthened security ties with France, and entered into an oil deal with Russia. The country continues to pursue a non-aligned foreign policy, which it defines as “free and active.” Last year, Indonesia joined the BRICS alliance of emerging economies, which includes both Russia and China, further complicating its diplomatic landscape.

Prabowo has also engaged with the U.S. administration by signing a trade deal and joining what has been termed the “Board of Peace” under former President Donald Trump. Recently, Jakarta is contemplating a U.S. request for blanket overflight clearance, a move that analysts suggest could signal a closer alignment with Washington amid tensions with Beijing.

Strategically positioned along the Malacca Strait—recognized as the world’s most heavily trafficked maritime passage for oil and petroleum liquids—Indonesia plays a critical role in global trade dynamics. A significant portion of the oil transported to China passes through this vital waterway, underscoring Indonesia’s importance in the geopolitical landscape.
