Further analysis has confirmed that a drone that crashed into a residential building in Galati, Romania, was of Russian origin, prompting significant backlash against Moscow. Romanian President Nicusor Dan announced on social media that the drone, identified as a Geran-2, was conclusively linked to Russia’s military forces.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, injuring a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-old woman, both of whom required hospitalization. This incident marks a troubling escalation, as it is the first recorded instance of a drone targeting a residential area outside Ukraine since Russia commenced its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude towards Romania for its transparency regarding the drone’s origin, stating that the facts serve as a powerful rebuttal to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assertions. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to collaborate closely with Romania and others to confront shared threats and enhance security throughout the region.
In contrast, Russia’s embassy in Romania responded by suggesting that the incident was a provocation orchestrated by Ukraine. Russian officials, including Putin, argued that the origins of the drone could not be definitively ascertained without a thorough investigation.
President Dan’s post included images of the drone and outlined the extensive technical analysis conducted by Romanian state experts. He highlighted that the drone not only bore a Cyrillic inscription identifying it as a Geran-2, but also exhibited electronic components and structural features that mirrored those of other Geran-2 drones previously found in Romania. The analysis further confirmed the presence of identical materials and fuels commonly associated with this type of drone.
While there have been numerous reports of drones crossing into Romanian airspace amid ongoing Russian military actions against Ukraine, this event marks a significant and alarming first, highlighting vulnerabilities as the conflict continues to unfold. The Romanian Ministry of Defense confirmed that the drone had entered its airspace coinciding with Russian strikes on Ukrainian territory.
