Flying Officer Minakshi Kumari has made history by becoming one of the first women from the inaugural all-female batch of the National Defence Academy (NDA) to be commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. Her commission occurred on June 13, 2026, following her successful training at the Air Force Academy in Dundigal, Hyderabad.

Raised in Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana, Minakshi grew up in a household that valued military discipline and dedication to the nation. Historically, women were not allowed to enroll in the NDA, but a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court in 2021 changed that, opening doors for women to take the entrance exam. She succeeded in not only passing the NDA written exam but also in impressing the Services Selection Board during her interviews.
On August 6, 2022, Minakshi joined the NDA as part of its first cohort of female cadets, entering a rigorous training program that encompassed academics, military education, and leadership development. The challenges of the program were intensified for her cohort, as their performance held the potential to shape future perceptions of women in the NDA.
Over the course of three years, Minakshi’s training included strenuous physical conditioning, academic assessments, and leadership exercises, all of which tested her stamina and character. Subsequently, she proceeded to the Air Force Academy for extensive pre-commissioning training.
