Indian Navy to Commission Three Indigenous Naval Platforms
The Indian Navy is set to achieve another milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing with the commissioning of three frontline naval platforms—INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray—at Kolkata on 21 June 2026. These vessels have been designed and constructed in India, showcasing the country’s growing self-reliance in naval shipbuilding.
Developed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), the three platforms strengthen India’s capabilities in maritime warfare, hydrographic surveying, and anti-submarine operations.
INS Dunagiri
INS Dunagiri is the fifth stealth frigate under the Project 17A program. It is equipped with advanced combat systems, including:
- BrahMos surface-to-surface missiles
- Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) system
- Modern sensors and surveillance equipment
The vessel significantly enhances the Navy’s blue-water combat capability and strengthens maritime security.
INS Sanshodhak
INS Sanshodhak is the fourth Survey Vessel (Large) designed for:
- Coastal and deep-sea hydrographic surveys
- Oceanographic and geophysical data collection
- Defence and civilian maritime applications
The ship is equipped with Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), making it one of the most advanced survey vessels in the Indian fleet.
INS Agray
INS Agray belongs to the Arnala-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft series. It has been designed to:
- Detect and track underwater threats
- Conduct anti-submarine operations in shallow waters
- Protect coastal regions and strategic maritime assets
The vessel carries lightweight torpedoes, indigenous rocket launchers, and advanced sonar systems.
Boost to Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
The construction of these ships involved over 200 Indian MSMEs and achieved more than 75% indigenous content. The project generated substantial employment and demonstrates the success of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence production.
Ministry of Defence Signs ₹425 Crore Contract for Marine Gas Turbine Generators
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth approximately ₹425 crore with Bharat Forge Limited, Pune, for the procurement of 12 sets of 1.25 MW Marine Gas Turbine Generators (MTGs) for the Indian Navy.
The agreement was signed under the Buy (Indian) category and includes a minimum of 60% indigenous content.
Significance of the Project
The project aims to:
- Strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing
- Enhance self-reliance in critical naval technologies
- Improve operational readiness of naval warships
- Provide end-to-end lifecycle support through domestic production
What are Marine Gas Turbine Generators?
Marine Gas Turbine Generators are high-power systems that combine gas turbines with electrical generators to produce electricity onboard ships. Their key advantages include:
- High power output
- Compact design
- Lightweight structure
- Reliability for combat operations
These generators provide energy for critical systems, including advanced weapons, sensors, communication equipment, and combat management systems.
The contract marks an important step towards establishing a domestic ecosystem for manufacturing naval power-generation systems.
