The Finnish Ministry of Defence has announced the procurement of Saab’s RBS 70 NG man-portable air defense missile systems, a significant investment amounting to 108 million euros (approximately $123.56 million). This strategic acquisition is aimed at bolstering Finland’s short-range air defense capabilities, particularly against both drones and traditional manned aircraft.
The RBS 70 NG marks an advancement over its predecessor, the RBS 70, which is currently utilized by the Finnish Defence Forces under the designation ITO05M. The timeline for deliveries and achieving full operational capability is projected to be by the end of the decade. As part of the procurement, the Ministry has included not only the missile systems themselves but also new firing devices, training equipment, and a comprehensive maintenance system. Training exercises for the new systems will take place at the Salpausselkä Air Defence Battery, part of the Karelia Brigade.
Finnish Minister of Defence Antti Häkkänen emphasized the importance of updating the country’s air defense systems in light of evolving threats. “We are developing Finland’s air defence system in a broad way,” he stated. Häkkänen underscored the necessity of equipping the forces with modern and appropriate technology to effectively respond to a range of potential threats, highlighting that this acquisition represents just one component of a broader strategy.
The RBS 70 NG system is designed with several advanced features that enhance its operational effectiveness. It includes an automatic target tracker, which significantly increases engagement accuracy while easing the operator’s workload. The missile is capable of targeting aircraft, drones, and even incoming missiles at a range of up to 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) and altitudes as high as 5 kilometers (3 miles), functioning effectively in both day and night conditions.
Notably, the missile can accelerate to speeds exceeding Mach 2, roughly translating to 2,470 kilometers (1,535 miles) per hour, allowing it to intercept high-speed threats effectively. The system is built for quick deployment, requiring only 45 seconds to set up, with the reload process taking under five seconds. Its unjammable laser guidance system offers improved resistance to electronic warfare countermeasures, while the fast reload capability enhances the reaction speed during dynamic combat scenarios.
As a man-portable air defense system, the RBS 70 NG provides the Finnish Defence Forces with enhanced flexibility for a variety of operational missions, making it a versatile addition to the nation’s defense arsenal.
