ISRO Clears CE20 Cryogenic Engine for LVM3-M7 Mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the flight acceptance hot test of the CE20 cryogenic engine, clearing it for use in the LVM3-M7 mission. The test was conducted on 6 July 2026 at the ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC), Mahendragiri, Tamil Nadu.

The CE20 engine powers the cryogenic upper stage of India’s heavy-lift launch vehicle, LVM3, which is used to place heavy satellites into orbit and support ambitious space missions. Cryogenic engines operate using super-cooled liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen, making them highly efficient for space launches.

During the latest trial, ISRO introduced a newly developed Nozzle Protection System for the first time in a flight acceptance test. This innovation allows the engine to perform more effectively under simulated high-altitude conditions. The engine initially generated 19.5 tonnes of thrust for 45 seconds, followed by its maximum rated thrust of 22 tonnes for another 25 seconds, successfully meeting all mission requirements.

The CE20 engine has already demonstrated its reliability by powering eight consecutive LVM3 missions, including the historic Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3, and several commercial satellite launches. Following refurbishment, the tested engine will be integrated with the C32 cryogenic stage for the upcoming LVM3-M7 mission, further strengthening India’s space capabilities.

Tamil Nadu Leads India in Higher Education Enrollment

Tamil Nadu has emerged as the leading state in higher education participation by recording a Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) of 52.3% during the 2023–24 academic year. The figures were released in the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) by the Union Government.

The Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) measures the percentage of students enrolled in higher education compared to the total population aged 18–23 years. Tamil Nadu’s performance is significantly above the national average of 30%, highlighting the state’s strong educational infrastructure and accessibility.

The state’s GER has steadily improved over recent years, increasing from 47.0% in 2021–22 to 49.1% in 2022–23, before reaching 52.3% in 2023–24. This consistent growth reflects sustained efforts to expand access to colleges and universities.

Women continue to outperform men in higher education enrollment in Tamil Nadu. During 2023–24, the female GER stood at 53.1%, compared to 51.6% for males, marking the third consecutive year in which female participation exceeded male enrollment. Out of nearly 68.4 lakh youth in the eligible age group, 35.8 lakh were enrolled in higher education institutions.

Tamil Nadu also possesses one of the country’s strongest academic workforces, with 2,18,656 faculty members, accounting for 12.6% of India’s total higher education teaching staff.

World Bank Approves $890 Million for PM Surya Ghar Rooftop Solar Scheme

The World Bank has approved a financing package worth 890 million US dollars to strengthen India’s flagship residential rooftop solar initiative, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The approval was granted by the World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors on 9–10 July 2026.

The scheme aims to install rooftop solar systems in 10 million households across rural and urban India, enabling families to generate clean electricity while reducing dependence on conventional energy sources.

The financing package consists of an 820 million US dollar loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), a 60 million US dollar concessional loan from the Clean Technology Fund, and a 10 million US dollar grant from the Livable Planet Fund. The funds will support rooftop solar deployment, strengthen institutions, and improve implementation capacity.

The programme is expected to attract nearly 4.2 billion US dollars in additional private investment through commercial lending. It is also projected to generate around 1.7 million employment opportunities in manufacturing, installation, maintenance, and related renewable energy services.

The initiative contributes to India’s long-term climate commitments, including achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and increasing the share of non-fossil fuel-based energy resources to 60% of electricity generation by 2035.

ONGC Approves Expansion of India’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve

In a significant step toward strengthening national energy security, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has granted in-principle approval for the construction of a 1.75 million metric tonne Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) at Mangaluru, Karnataka. The approval was given on 9 July 2026.

A Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) is a government-maintained emergency stockpile of crude oil designed to protect the country against supply disruptions, geopolitical crises, or sudden spikes in global oil prices.

The new storage facility forms part of the Phase-I expansion of India’s strategic crude storage programme, which is managed by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL) under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

India currently possesses 5.33 million metric tonnes of strategic crude storage capacity across Visakhapatnam, Mangaluru, and Padur. These reserves can meet approximately 9.5 days of the country’s crude oil requirements, based on previous consumption levels.

ONGC has become the first public sector energy company in India to directly finance the development of a strategic petroleum storage facility. The expansion is expected to enhance India’s preparedness against global energy disruptions and improve long-term energy resilience.
