In a significant move for the UK military, Leonardo has partnered with GE Aerospace to provide engines for 23 AW149 helicopters as part of the UK Ministry of Defence’s New Medium Helicopter program. This collaboration is fueled by an agreement in which GE Aerospace will supply its advanced CT7-2E1 engines, along with necessary spare engines, parts, and long-term maintenance services.
The CT7-2E1 engine is noted for its modular design, allowing operators to service individual engine modules in the field. This capability enhances operational flexibility, reducing downtime and the need to transport entire engine systems to maintenance depots. Additionally, the integration of the CT7-2E1 with the UK military fleet introduces commonality with the existing T700/CT7 engine family, streamlining support and training for military operators.
Work tied to this program will span multiple sites across the UK. StandardAero’s facility in Gosport is set to handle the building, maintenance, and overhaul of the CT7-2E1 engines, which may serve future export needs. Meanwhile, Barnes Aerospace will contribute manufacturing expertise for engine components from its Newton Abbot facility. Over 300 CT7-2E1 engines have been delivered globally, amassing more than 500,000 flight hours, underscoring their reliability and operational success.
This engine selection follows the awarding of a £1 billion ($1.3 billion) contract to Leonardo by the UK Ministry of Defence in February. This contract not only covers the 23 AW149 helicopters but also includes four training simulators designed to enhance pilot training and operational readiness.
Production of the helicopters will be centered at Leonardo’s facility in Yeovil, Somerset, with the program anticipated to support approximately 3,300 jobs throughout the UK. Furthermore, Leonardo has committed to ensuring that future international military orders are built within the UK, maintaining a British workshare of over 40 percent.
The UK government has also indicated substantial export prospects for the AW149, estimating potential opportunities worth over £15 billion ($20.1 billion) in the coming decade. This development highlights the strategic importance of the AW149 helicopters not only to UK defense capabilities but also to the broader UK aerospace industry’s growth and international competitiveness.
