In a notable development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, Ukrainian authorities reported on Thursday the repatriation of 501 bodies believed to be those of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. This exchange marks a rare instance of cooperation between the two nations amid the hostilities triggered by Russia’s invasion in 2022.
According to Kyiv’s prisoners of war center, the bodies returned to Ukraine resulted from ongoing repatriation efforts and are reported to have originated from Russian sources. The center specified that the remains may belong to Ukrainian servicemen.
Facilitating this exchange was the International Red Cross, which has played a crucial role in mediating various humanitarian efforts throughout the conflict. Following the repatriation, Ukrainian investigators and forensic experts will undertake the task of identifying the remains to provide closure to the families of the fallen soldiers.
In a reciprocal move, Russia also received the bodies of 31 soldiers during the exchange, as confirmed by Russian lawmaker Shamsail Saraliyev in statements to RBC.
Since the onset of the conflict, the exchange of prisoners and the remains of deceased combatants has emerged as one of the few channels of communication between Moscow and Kyiv, underscoring the complex nature of their interactions amidst ongoing military operations.
