Indian Institutions Increase Representation in QS World University Rankings 2027
India has significantly increased its presence in the QS World University Rankings 2027, with 52 Indian higher-education institutions featuring in the global ranking. This is a substantial increase from just 11 Indian institutions listed in the 2015 edition.
The QS World University Rankings are published annually by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). The ranking evaluates universities using several indicators, including academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty-student ratio, research citations and internationalisation.
IIT Delhi Leads Indian Institutions
The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) emerged as India’s highest-ranked institution in the 2027 edition, securing 118th position globally. It improved by five places and equalled the best-ever global position achieved by an Indian institution.
Other leading Indian institutions included:
- IIT Bombay – 134th
- IIT Madras – 170th
- IIT Kharagpur – 205th
- IISc Bengaluru – 221st
- IIT Kanpur – 221st
- University of Delhi – 322nd
Of the 52 Indian institutions, 26 improved their rankings, nine remained at the same positions, 15 declined and two entered the ranking for the first time. Eighteen institutions achieved their best-ever QS positions.
Significance
The growing representation of Indian institutions reflects the expansion of India’s higher-education and research ecosystem and the increasing international visibility of its universities.
V.O. Chidambaranar Port Becomes India’s First Scope-2 Emission-Free Major Port
The V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOC Port) in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming India’s first major port to attain Scope-2 Emission-Free status.
The achievement was recorded on 10 August 2026. The port also became the first Indian port to obtain ISO 50001:2018 certification for its Energy Management System.
What Are Scope-2 Emissions?
Scope-2 emissions are indirect greenhouse-gas emissions associated with the consumption of purchased electricity, steam, heating or cooling.
A facility can achieve Scope-2 emission-free status when its renewable-energy generation exceeds its electricity consumption over the relevant assessment period.
Independent verification for the fourth quarter of FY 2025–26 confirmed that the port generated more renewable electricity than it consumed. During the entire financial year, renewable energy accounted for 93.89% of the port’s electricity consumption.
Green Infrastructure at VOC Port
The port currently has:
- 7.04 MW solar capacity
- 2 MW wind capacity
It has also planned additional green-energy infrastructure, including 2 MW ground-mounted solar capacity, 17 MW wind capacity with 5 MWh battery storage, and a Green Hydrogen Hub.
Significance
VOC Port’s achievement demonstrates how renewable energy and energy-management systems can contribute to reducing emissions in India’s maritime and logistics sector.
India Wins 17 Medals at U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship
India made an impressive start at the U-23 Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026, winning 17 medals on the opening day in Lagos, Nigeria.
The championship began on 9 August 2026 and is scheduled to continue until 14 August 2026. India’s opening-day medal tally consisted of 4 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze medals across sabre, foil and epee events.

In men’s events, Nikhil Wagh won gold in sabre, while Lakshay Badser secured silver. Ashwini Arya and Laishram Moramba won bronze medals.

India Wins Four Medals at International Linguistics Olympiad 2026
India recorded a strong performance at the 23rd International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) 2026, held in Bucharest, Romania.
The Indian contingent won one gold medal, three bronze medals and one Honourable Mention. The eight-member Indian team participated in the individual competition.
The International Linguistics Olympiad is an annual academic competition for secondary-school students. Participants solve analytical problems involving areas such as phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics and language comparison.
Indian Medal Winners
Shrilakshmi Venkatraman won the individual gold medal with a score of 70.0.
The three bronze medallists were:

The competition attracted 255 individual participants from more than 40 countries.
India’s Selection Process
Indian participants are selected through the Panini Linguistics Olympiad (PLO), which serves as the national qualifying competition for the IOL.
The 2026 Open National Qualifying Contest was conducted on 15 February 2026, with 338 of the 525 registered students appearing in the first round.
China’s Long March 7A Rocket Fails After Launch
China’s Long March 7A rocket experienced a launch failure on 10 August 2026 while carrying the ChinaSat-4B communications satellite.
The approximately 60-metre-long rocket launched from the Wenchang Space Launch Site on Hainan Island. Around 85 seconds after liftoff, the launch vehicle suffered an in-flight anomaly and broke apart.
ChinaSat-4B
ChinaSat-4B is a communications satellite designed to provide services related to radio, television and telecommunications.
The satellite was lost after the rocket broke up at relatively low altitude over the South China Sea.
The Long March 7A belongs to China’s wider Long March family of orbital launch vehicles. It uses YF-100 engines, a liquid-fuel engine technology also used in other Chinese launch systems.
According to the PPT, this was the second failure in 18 Long March 7A missions. The first occurred during the rocket’s maiden flight in March 2020.
Chinese authorities stated on 11 August 2026 that an investigation into the cause of the anomaly was underway.
NASA Invites ISRO to Participate in Moon Base Programme
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its Moon Base programme under the framework of the Artemis Accords.
India became a signatory to the Artemis Accords on 21 June 2023. The accords establish non-binding principles for responsible civil exploration and use of outer space.
What Are the Artemis Accords?
The Artemis Accords were launched by the United States in 2020. They promote principles related to:
- Transparency
- Interoperability
- Emergency assistance
- Sharing of scientific data
- Registration of space objects
- Responsible lunar exploration
The invitation was discussed during the 9th meeting of the India-US Civil Space Joint Working Group, held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru on 5–6 August 2026.
Significance for India
Greater participation in lunar exploration could provide opportunities for India to deepen cooperation in space science, technology development, scientific data sharing and future human and robotic exploration.
The initiative also fits into the broader international effort to promote sustainable and responsible activities beyond Earth.
Skyroot Aerospace Signs Multi-Launch Agreement with HEX20
Indian private space company Skyroot Aerospace has signed a Multi-Launch Agreement (MLA) with HEX20, a spacetech startup based in Thiruvananthapuram.
The agreement covers three dedicated launches using Skyroot’s Vikram series of launch vehicles. The missions are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027.
What Is a Multi-Launch Agreement?
An MLA is a commercial arrangement under which a launch provider agrees to conduct multiple satellite or payload launches for a customer over a specified period.
The agreement between Skyroot and HEX20 was finalised on 6 August 2026.
Vikram-1 Milestone
Skyroot’s Vikram-1 completed its maiden orbital flight on 18 July 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The rocket is described in the PPT as India’s first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle. During its maiden mission, Vikram-1 successfully deployed multiple customer payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), including the SCOPE and Grahaa satellites.
Significance
