World Elephant Day 2026
World Elephant Day is observed every year on 12 August to draw attention to elephant conservation and the growing threats faced by elephant populations around the world.
The 2026 theme, “Bringing the world together to help elephants,” highlights the importance of international cooperation in protecting elephants, preserving their habitats and addressing challenges such as human-elephant conflict.
India has a particularly important role in Asian elephant conservation. Government documents indicate that more than 60% of the world’s wild Asian elephants are found in India. The Asian elephant is classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and receives the highest level of legal protection under India’s Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
India launched Project Elephant in 1992 as a Centrally Sponsored Scheme. The programme focuses on elephant conservation, protection of elephant habitats and measures to reduce human-elephant conflict.

International Youth Day 2026

Parliament Passes Bankers’ Book Evidence Bill 2026
The Bankers’ Book Evidence Bill, 2026 has been passed by Parliament, paving the way for a modern legal framework governing the use of banking records in judicial proceedings.
The legislation replaces the Bankers’ Book Evidence Act, 1891, which was created when banking records were primarily maintained in physical form. With the rapid digitalisation of banking, the older framework faced challenges concerning the treatment and presentation of electronically stored banking information before courts.
The new legislation provides a technology-neutral framework for bankers’ books and gives legal recognition to records maintained in electronic and digital formats.
During the Rajya Sabha discussion, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the need to update the law in view of technological developments in the banking sector.
The reform is significant because modern banks generate and store enormous volumes of digital information. A contemporary legal framework can help courts deal more effectively with such records.

Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards 2024–25
The Sangeet Natak Akademi is set to honour artists for their contribution to India’s performing arts. The President of India is scheduled to confer the Akademi Fellowships and Awards for 2024 and 2025 on 13 August 2026.
A total of 115 artists have been selected for recognition across diverse fields, including music, dance, theatre, folk and tribal traditions, puppetry, instrument making and other performing arts.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards have been presented since 1952. They recognise contributions not only to classical music and dance but also to traditional, folk, tribal and other performing-art forms.
The highest recognition of the Akademi is the Akademi Fellowship, also known as Akademi Ratna. A Fellow receives ₹3 lakh, while an Akademi Award carries ₹1 lakh, along with a Tamrapatra and Angavastram.

Tribunals Reforms Bill 2026 Passed by Parliament
The Tribunals Reforms Bill, 2026 has received parliamentary approval, marking a major proposed restructuring of India’s tribunal system.
A central feature of the new framework is the proposed National Tribunals Commission (NTC). The objective is to bring greater uniformity to the appointment, service conditions and tenure of tribunal members.
The Bill seeks to replace the Tribunals Reforms Act, 2021 with a new legal framework centred around the National Tribunals Commission.
Under the proposed provisions, Chairpersons of tribunals can serve for five years or until reaching 70 years of age, whichever comes earlier. Other Members can serve for five years or until reaching 67 years, whichever comes first. Reappointment may also be possible based on performance.
The framework covers important tribunals including the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), National Green Tribunal (NGT), Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT), CESTAT, Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) and TDSAT.

Colombia Declares National Emergency After 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake
