New Himalayan Plant Species Named After Mountaineer Nirmal Purja
A newly identified flowering plant from the Himalayas has been named Impatiens nimspurjai in honour of renowned Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja.
The discovery highlights the rich biodiversity of the Himalayan region and combines scientific recognition with a tribute to one of Nepal’s celebrated mountaineers.
Discovery in Nepal
The plant was discovered in Myagdi district of Nepal at an elevation of approximately 2,800–2,900 metres.
Researchers Bhakta Bahadur Raskoti and Rita Ale identified the species. It belongs to the Impatiens genus, a group of flowering plants found across several parts of Asia.
In Nepal, species belonging to this group are commonly known as “tiuri.”
Why Is the Discovery Significant?
Naming the species Impatiens nimspurjai after Nirmal Purja provides a lasting scientific tribute to the mountaineer while drawing attention to the Himalayan ecosystem.
