Electrical Engineering is one of the most important engineering disciplines for modern military systems. From power generation and transmission to electric vehicles, radar infrastructure, communication systems, renewable energy, control systems, electrical machines, and high-reliability equipment, electrical engineering plays a crucial role in keeping modern organisations and defence systems operational.

Therefore, if you are an Electrical Engineering graduate appearing for the SSB Interview, the Interviewing Officer may ask you much more than textbook definitions. You may be asked to troubleshoot an electrical problem, apply your academic knowledge to a military situation, make decisions with limited resources, or explain a complex electrical concept in simple language.

But remember, the SSB Interview is not merely an Electrical Engineering viva. Your technical knowledge is only one part of the assessment. Question 2: If the power supply of an important military installation suddenly fails, what would you do first?

To assess your ability to remain calm and approach a problem systematically.

Prioritise safety, identify the extent of the failure, and consider backup arrangements.

Sample Answer:

“First, I would ensure that personnel are safe and determine whether the failure is localised or affects the entire installation. I would check the relevant power systems and coordinate with the technical team while ensuring that authorised backup power arrangements are activated for critical functions.”

Question 4: What is the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse?

“Both protect electrical circuits from excessive current. A fuse operates by melting when the current exceeds its rated limit, whereas a circuit breaker automatically opens the circuit and can generally be reset after the fault is addressed.”

Question 18: What is one electrical engineering concept that you think every officer should understand?

Question 19: If you had to explain electricity to a school student in one minute, how would you do it?

Question 20: Your Electrical Engineering degree tells us what you studied. What tells us that you can become an officer?

As an Electrical Engineering graduate, remember that the SSB Interview is not simply an engineering viva. Your technical knowledge is important, but the Interviewing Officer is equally interested in your personality, judgment, confidence, communication, and ability to handle responsibility.

Before appearing for the interview, revise your core subjects such as Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Power Electronics, Control Systems, Network Theory, Electrical Measurements and Instrumentation, Signals and Systems, Analog and Digital Electronics, Engineering Mathematics, and your final-year project.

Be especially thorough about the project mentioned in your application or personal information. Know exactly what the project was about, why you selected it, what your individual contribution was, what problems you encountered, what results you obtained, and what you would change if you had another opportunity.

Also be prepared for practical questions. The Interviewing Officer may give you a situation such as a motor overheating, a power supply failing, a circuit tripping repeatedly, or an electrical installation facing limited power availability. Do not rush to give a complicated answer. Think step by step.

First understand the problem. Then identify the likely causes. Assess safety. Prioritise the critical requirement. Use available resources. Consult the appropriate technical personnel when necessary. Finally, take a practical decision.

This approach demonstrates not only engineering knowledge but also Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Sense of Responsibility, Initiative, and Speed of Decision Making.

And remember one important rule: Never bluff a technical answer. If you do not know something, accept it confidently. The Board is not expecting you to know everything. It is interested in seeing whether you can remain composed and think logically when faced with something unfamiliar.

Your Electrical Engineering degree shows that you can understand complex systems. Your experiences show how you behave in real situations. But your SSB performance should demonstrate that you can take responsibility, work with people, and make sound decisions.
