HAL and Safran Sign Aravalli Helicopter Engine Contract
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final agreement in Bengaluru to jointly develop and manufacture a new high-power turboshaft engine for 13-tonne-class helicopters.
The agreement has been executed through SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines. The engine has been named “Aravalli”, taking its name from the historic Aravalli mountain range of India.
The Aravalli engine is planned for the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower category. The agreement covers the complete lifecycle of the engine, including its design, development, manufacturing, supply and long-term support.
A major application of the engine will be HAL’s Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) programme. Its naval version, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH), is also planned to use the engine. The DBMRH is intended for operations from Indian Navy warships.
The engine programme could also find applications in the civil sector, including offshore transportation, utility operations and VVIP transportation. Development of domestic Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capabilities is another important part of the programme.
The project represents an important step towards strengthening India’s indigenous helicopter-engine ecosystem and reducing dependence on imported propulsion technologies.
7th High-Level Meeting Between Indian and Vietnam Coast Guards
The 7th High-Level Meeting (HLM) between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Vietnam Coast Guard (VCG) was conducted in Chennai on 25 August 2026. The meeting was held under the framework of the 2015 Memorandum of Understanding on Coast Guard Cooperation.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in areas such as:
- Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR)
- Maritime law enforcement
- Marine pollution response
- Capacity building
- Professional exchanges
- Ship visits
- Training and sharing of best practices
Both sides reviewed ongoing bilateral activities and stressed the importance of regular institutional engagement to improve coordination and interoperability.
India and Vietnam also reaffirmed their shared interest in maintaining maritime safety, security and environmental sustainability in the region.
As part of the continuing cooperation between the two countries, the India–Vietnam Coast Guard Joint Exercise SAHYOG-HOPTAC is scheduled to take place at sea on 27 August 2026.
Tribute to Goa Liberation Satyagrahis
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the redeveloped Hutatma Smruti Smarak at Patradevi, Goa, on 26 August 2026. The memorial is associated with the struggle for Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule.
The occasion also recalled the contribution and sacrifices of the freedom fighters and satyagrahis involved in Goa’s liberation movement.
The liberation of Goa was achieved through Operation Vijay in 1961, a tri-service military operation involving the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force.

Flash Flood Situation in Nepal
The Central Government closely monitored the situation following a severe flash flood in Nepal. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh regarding possible downstream effects of the disaster.
According to the information provided by the Central Water Commission (CWC), a sudden increase in water levels was reported in the Trishuli River at Furke Khola in Nepal. The event was linked to suspected flash-flood or glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) activity near the Nepal–China border.
Since the Trishuli is connected to the Gandak river system, authorities were concerned about the possible movement of excess water downstream into India.
Bihar and Uttar Pradesh were advised to remain alert and closely monitor the situation, particularly in areas near the India–Nepal border. Measures including evacuation and assistance to vulnerable communities were undertaken by the state authorities.
The disaster caused extensive destruction in Nepal, affecting settlements, bridges and hydropower infrastructure, while authorities continued efforts to assess casualties and missing persons.
DRDO Successfully Tests Military Combat Parachute System
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted a high-altitude trial of its indigenously developed Military Combat Parachute System (MCPS) in Ladakh.
The test was carried out at the Nyoma-Mudh Drop Zone, one of the world’s high-altitude drop zones. Test personnel performed a jump from approximately 22,000 feet under extremely cold conditions of around −15°C.
The parachute was deployed at approximately 20,000 feet, and the test jumpers landed safely at an altitude of around 13,700 feet.
The successful trial demonstrated the system’s reliability and its potential use for military operations in challenging high-altitude environments.

The system was designed and developed by:
- Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra
- Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), Bengaluru
The trial involved ADRDE test jumpers, including Wing Commander Rahul Jha, Chief Test Jumper, along with Master Warrant Officer R J Singh, VM(G) and Master Warrant Officer Vivek Tiwari.
The successful demonstration highlights India’s growing capability to develop specialised airborne military systems for operations in extreme environments.
