Teachers’ Day 2026
Teachers’ Day is observed across India every year on 5 September to honour teachers and mentors for their contribution to education and society.
The day is associated with Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on 5 September 1888 at Tiruttani in the erstwhile Madras Presidency. He studied at Madras Christian College and later became a professor of philosophy at institutions including the University of Mysore and the University of Calcutta.
Dr. Radhakrishnan also held two of India’s highest constitutional offices. He served as India’s first Vice President from 1952 to 1962 and became the second President of India in 1962, serving until 1967.

Indian women’s cricket star Smriti Mandhana created a major record on 3 September 2026 during India’s Women’s T20 Asia Cup match against Hong Kong in Dubai.

Malaysia Declares Emergency as Serian Haze Index Hits 519
Malaysia declared an emergency in Serian district of Sarawak after extremely hazardous air pollution caused by thick haze linked to forest fires in neighbouring Indonesia.
The Air Pollution Index (API) in Serian reached 519, far exceeding Malaysia’s hazardous threshold of 300. An API level above 500 can trigger an emergency declaration.
The haze has been primarily associated with forest fires in Indonesia. Sarawak and Indonesia share the island of Borneo, allowing smoke to cross the border under favourable weather conditions.

Giorgia Meloni Becomes Italy’s Longest-Serving Postwar Prime Minister
Giorgia Meloni became the longest continuously serving postwar Prime Minister of Italy on 4 September 2026, completing 1,413 consecutive days in office.
Meloni became Prime Minister on 22 October 2022 and leads the Brothers of Italy (Fratelli d’Italia) party. She is also Italy’s first woman Prime Minister.
She surpassed the previous postwar continuity record of 1,412 days, held by Silvio Berlusconi during his second administration from June 2001 to April 2005.
On 4 September 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Meloni on X. Meloni responded by highlighting cooperation between India and Italy, including their work on the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC).

India Wins Nine Medals at International Earth Science Olympiad 2026
India achieved its best-ever performance at the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO) 2026, held in Turin, Italy, from 20–27 August 2026.
A four-member Indian student team won a total of nine medals:

The Indian contingent consisted of:

They were selected from approximately 17,000 national applicants and underwent training camps at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and Anna University, Chennai.
Soumik Mandal won gold in the individual written and practical examinations and recorded the third-highest individual score in IESO’s 19-year history.
Riddhi Ranjan and Soumik Mandal won gold in the International Team Field Investigation, while Aaron Maiti won gold in the Earth Science Project.

India and Japan are scheduled to play their first men’s T20 International on 22 September 2026 at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan.
