National Wildlife Week 2026

National Wildlife Week 2026 is being observed across India from 2 to 8 October with the objective of promoting awareness about wildlife conservation, protection of habitats and the importance of biodiversity.

The theme for National Wildlife Week 2026 is “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife.”

Connected habitats are important for maintaining healthy wildlife populations. They facilitate the movement and migration of animals, support genetic diversity, provide access to essential resources such as food and water, and help reduce human-wildlife conflict. Habitat connectivity also contributes to the long-term conservation of biodiversity.

The origins of Wildlife Week in India can be traced back to 1952, when the Government of India established the Indian Board for Wildlife (IBWL) to promote wildlife conservation.

Important milestones include:

  • 1952: Indian Board for Wildlife was constituted.
  • 1955: National Wildlife Day was observed for the first time.
  • 1957: The observance was expanded into a week-long programme.

National Wildlife Week continues to provide a platform for highlighting the importance of protecting India’s wildlife and natural habitats.

World Cerebral Palsy Day 2026

World Cerebral Palsy Day 2026 is observed on 6 October to create awareness about cerebral palsy and promote the rights, inclusion, accessibility and equal participation of people living with the condition.

The observance also draws attention to challenges faced by people with cerebral palsy in areas such as healthcare, education, employment, mobility and access to public spaces.

Cerebral palsy (CP) refers to a group of lifelong neurological conditions that primarily affect movement, muscle control, balance, posture, coordination and communication.

The global movement associated with World Cerebral Palsy Day was established in 2012 by Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Australia, and United Cerebral Palsy, United States. Its first campaign was titled “Change My World.”

The theme of World Cerebral Palsy Day 2026 is “Unique and United”, with the campaign hashtag #UniqueANDUnited.

The day highlights the importance of creating an inclusive society in which people with cerebral palsy can participate equally and access opportunities without barriers.

First Recipients of New IOA Awards

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has announced the inaugural recipients of two newly instituted awards. Archer Kumkum Anil Mohod has been named the first recipient of the Jaspal Rana Award, while wrestler Sujeet Kalkal has received the first Raja Randhir Singh Award.

The awards have been established by the IOA to recognise outstanding female and male sportspersons at the Asian Games and to honour the contributions and legacy of two prominent personalities in Indian sport.

Seventeen-year-old archer Kumkum Anil Mohod received the Jaspal Rana Award following her impressive performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Making her Asian Games debut, Kumkum won three medals, including two gold medals.

She was part of India’s women’s recurve team that won gold along with Ankita Bhakat and Kirti, ending South Korea’s seven-edition winning streak in the event that had continued since the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games.

Kumkum also secured gold in the women’s individual recurve event. Her individual victory also earned India a quota place for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Wrestler Sujeet Kalkal, aged 23, was named the inaugural recipient of the Raja Randhir Singh Award. He won gold in the men’s 65 kg freestyle wrestling category at the Asian Games. In the semifinal, he defeated reigning Olympic champion Kotaro Kiyooka of Japan.

The two awards introduced by the IOA are:

  • Jaspal Rana Award – Best Female Sportsperson
  • Raja Randhir Singh Award – Best Male Sportsperson

Kumkum Mohod and Sujeet Kalkal will be formally felicitated by the Indian Olympic Association.

Nobel Prize in Physics 2026

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics to physicist Francis Halzen for his pioneering contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin.

The prize citation recognises Halzen for his decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos originating from astrophysical sources.

Francis Halzen is particularly known for his important role in developing the scientific concept behind the IceCube Neutrino Observatory.

Neutrinos are extremely light and electrically neutral subatomic particles. They are often described as “ghost particles” because they interact very weakly with matter. Enormous numbers of neutrinos pass through the human body every second without producing any noticeable effect.

High-energy neutrinos provide scientists with an important way to study some of the most powerful phenomena and objects in the universe. These include:

  • Active galactic nuclei
  • Supermassive black holes
  • Exploding stars
  • Gamma-ray bursts
  • Other high-energy cosmic accelerators

The study of these particles helps scientists investigate energetic processes occurring far beyond Earth and provides valuable information about the high-energy universe.

Doha Receives OCA Flag as Host Responsibility for 2030 Asian Games

The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) flag was formally handed over during the closing ceremony of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 in Nagoya, Japan, on 4 October 2026.

The handover formally recognised Qatar’s responsibility for hosting the 21st Asian Games in Doha in 2030.

Qatar has also unveiled the official Doha 2030 identity and motto, “The Games We Live For,” as preparations for the next edition of the continental multi-sport event begin.

The slogan “The Games We Live For” forms a key part of the Doha 2030 identity. The new visual identity incorporates the OCA’s sun logo into the letter “O” of the word “DOHA”, connecting the host city with the Asian Games Movement while reflecting Qatar’s heritage and its vision for future generations.

The 2026 Asian Games concluded on October 4, 2026. During the closing ceremony, OCA President Sheikh Joaan officially declared the Games closed and invited Asian athletes to return to Doha for the next edition in 2030.

Harmanpreet Kaur Steps Down as India Women’s Cricket Captain

India’s World Cup-winning captain Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down from captaincy of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats with immediate effect. She will, however, continue to represent India as a player.

Harmanpreet confirmed her decision on 6 October 2026, bringing an end to her decade-long tenure as a leader in international cricket.

She became India’s T20I captain in 2016 and was later appointed full-time captain of the ODI and Test teams in 2022, following the retirement of former India captain Mithali Raj.

During her captaincy, Harmanpreet led India in:

  • 5 Tests
  • 51 ODIs
  • 155 T20Is

Her final assignment as captain concluded with India winning a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal, following the team’s titles in 2022 and 2026.

The biggest achievement of her captaincy came in 2025, when she led India to its maiden ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title on home soil.

With that victory, Harmanpreet became the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win a 50-over World Cup.

Although she has relinquished the captaincy, she will continue playing for the Indian women’s cricket team.
