The Indian Army has pushed back against a fake video circulating online that falsely places fabricated statements in the mouth of Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Spear Corps (3 Corps). The edited clip alleges that China has captured Asaphila, Longjou (also referred to as Longju in some reports) and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh, while also suggesting that troops in the area have been denied essential supplies.
Army says the clip uses AI-generated manipulation
According to the Army’s official fact-checking handle, Indian Army Fact Check (@MythbusterXX), the post was issued on 25 October 2026 and identified the material as synthetic-generated information. The Army said the video relied on AI-generated lip-syncing and voice cloning layered over old footage to make the false claims appear real.
In its clarification, the Army stated: “A digitally altered video is being circulated with fabricated remarks attributed to Lt Gen Girish Kalia, claiming that China has taken control of Asaphila, Longjou and Taksing Circle in Arunachal Pradesh and that the Indian Army has been denied essential supplies. The misleading video attempts to portray fabricated statements as a leaked admission by a senior Indian Army officer. The video uses #SyntheticGeneratedInformation to falsely attribute remarks to Lt Gen Girish Kalia.”
Where the original footage came from
The Army said the base video was taken from a press briefing held on 27 October 2023 in Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir. At that time, Kalia was serving as a Major General and was the GOC of the 28 Infantry Division. The briefing focused on counter-terrorism operations and infiltration attempts across the Line of Control (LoC).
During that original address, he said security forces had foiled 10 infiltration attempts, eliminated 27 terrorists, and recovered large quantities of warlike stores, ammunition and narcotics. The Army noted that the original briefing made no mention of China, territorial changes in Arunachal Pradesh, or any denial of supplies to Indian troops.
Army terms the post military disinformation
The Army described the manipulated clip as an effort to spread military disinformation and trigger unnecessary alarm. It summarised the tactic in the form: “Old military briefing + Digitally manipulated remarks + False attribution + Fabricated territorial claims = Misleading military disinformation.”
The public has been asked to stay alert, check information through official channels before forwarding unverified videos or claims, and be cautious of AI-generated or digitally altered content. The Army said stopping the spread of such misinformation is important, especially when it concerns national security and military operations.
Lt Gen Girish Kalia (AVSM, VSM) is currently the GOC of Spear Corps, which is headquartered near Dimapur and has operational responsibility that includes areas of Arunachal Pradesh. The clarification was issued amid other recent Army fact-checks on circulating claims linked to the region. The report is based on inputs from the Army’s fact-check and ANI.
The Army also reiterated that the public should rely on original sources and authentic official channels for information related to military matters.
