Launch of SRBM ‘Agni-1’ Missile
Training launch of Short-Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was carried out successfully from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on December 07, 2023. Agni-1 is a proven very high precision missile system. The user training launch, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, successfully validated all operational and technical parameters.
The missile had previously undergone a successful test on June 1 from the same launch site. The Agni series of missiles continues to be a crucial component of India’s nuclear delivery capabilities.
The Agni-I is an Indian short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) with a range of 700 km. The Indian Army’s Strategic Forces Command first deployed the nuclear-capable, road-mobile missile in 2007.
Strategic Forces Command
The Strategic Forces Command, sometimes called Strategic Nuclear Command, forms part of India’s Nuclear Command Authority. It is responsible for the management and administration of the country’s tactical and strategic nuclear weapons stockpile. It was created on 4 January 2003.
Agni-I Development
The Agni-I originated from India’s 1983 Integrated Guided Missile Development Program, which also developed the Prithvi, Nag, Akash, and Trishul missiles. India’s DRDO originally envisioned a two-stage rocket—the Agni demonstrator—for validating reentry vehicle technologies. The DRDO adapted the Agni from two existing boosters: a solid-fueled first stage from India’s SLV-3 space launch vehicle, and a modified Prithvi-I body for the missile’s upper stage.
Defence Research and Development Organisation
DRDO is the R&D (Research and Development) wing of the Ministry of Defence with a vision to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies. Its pursuit of self-reliance and successful indigenous development and production of strategic systems and platforms such as Agni and Prithvi series of missiles, LCA, Tejas, multi-barrel rocket launcher, Pinaka, air defence system, Akash, a wide range of radars and electronic warfare systems, etc.. It was formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of the Technical Development Establishment of the Indian Army and the Directorate of Technical Development & Production with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).
DRDO is a network of more than 50 laboratories which are deeply engaged in developing defence technologies covering various disciplines, like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, combat vehicles, engineering systems etc.
