Air Force Academy Celebrates 50 Years of Pre Flying Training Course with Graduation of 100th Batch

The Air Force Academy (AFA) in Hyderabad recently marked a significant milestone by celebrating 50 years of its Pre Flying Training Course (PFTC) alongside the graduation of its 100th batch. This dual celebration, held on May 29 at the AFA campus, highlights both the institution’s legacy and its ongoing contributions to military training in India.

Since its establishment in 1971, the AFA has played a crucial role in training personnel for the Indian Air Force (IAF), including future pilots, ground duty officers, and technical professionals. The PFTC, which serves as an essential ab-initio program, prepares candidates for various entry streams into the IAF’s Flying Branch, including the Combined Defence Services (CDS), Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT), National Cadet Corps (NCC), and Service Entry schemes. Notably, the program actively inducts women officers, reflecting the IAF’s commitment to inclusivity.

Air Marshal Tejbir Singh AVSM VM, Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) at Headquarters Training Command, graced the golden jubilee ceremony as the Chief Guest. With over 7,000 flying hours to his credit, he has been a significant figure in the induction of advanced aircraft and the establishment of the IAF’s first Special Operations Squadron. During his address to the trainees, he emphasized the importance of embracing new technologies and evolving combat strategies, encouraging cadets to focus on both personal development and professional excellence.

The ceremony also featured a group photograph of the 100th PFTC batch, proudly donned in their ceremonial light blue uniforms, capturing the essence of their achievement. A formal memento presentation showcased the theme “Valedictory Function,” framed by the national and IAF flags.

Situated on a sprawling 6,700 acres, about 43 km from Hyderabad, the AFA maintains high standards in military training. The PFTC curriculum meshes military discipline with skill development through a diverse array of activities, including yoga, weapon training, public speaking, field craft, and cultural programs. Training for flying branch cadets progresses through three stages, leading to commissioning and deployment to operational squadrons, while ground duty trainees receive specialized instruction in various administrative and technical areas to prepare them for diverse roles in the force.

As the AFA celebrates this golden milestone, it continues to live by its motto of “touching the sky with glory,” affirming its dedication to shaping the future of the Indian Air Force with unwavering pride, precision, and purpose.
