DRDO and SAFRAN to develop High Thrust 110KN Engine for AMCA MK-2 Fighter Jets. This comes after India secured a landmark deal for the co-manufacture of General Electric GE F-414 jet engines in India with an eighty per cent ToT (Transfer of Technology) during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to the United States.

The General Electric transaction will involve the transfer of crucial technologies that the United States has previously not even shared with treaty allies such as the United Kingdom, France, and Australia. The technologies include machining and coating of single-crystal turbine blades, nozzle-guide vanes, and ceramic matrix components (CMCs), thermal barrier coating for the hot end, laser drilling of the combustor, and bottle boring of shafts.

The GE F-414 engines will power the Tejas Mk-2 and AMCA Mk-1 jets, which are currently in development. The French bid, on the other hand, is for the creation of an entirely new, high-thrust engine (generating 110KN of push) for the AMCA MK-2, allowing the AMCA to supercruise. Supercruising allows an aircraft to fly supersonic (faster than the speed of sound) without using its afterburner, reducing fuel burn and thereby boosting range, time on station, and infrared signature.

The French offer has already arrived, and they are willing to transfer full technology and put “no restrictions on stopping any access to sensitive issues,” while General Electric of the United States and Rolls Royce (RR) of the United Kingdom are also competing for the project. It should be noted that the French did not develop the high-thrust 110-KN jet engine.

The engine on offer would be an entirely new design created together by both the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Safran, and will ‘involve clear division of work’. This is going to be a learning process for both sides as issues like design involving the thrust-to-weight ratio, metallurgy and manufacturing process will have to be discussed in detail.
