Amit Shah Asks IB to Stay Ready for ‘Challenges of Future’
Delivering the 37th Intelligence Bureau centenary endowment lecture in New Delhi, Mr. Shah said, out-of-box thinking is required to find solutions in the face of challenges such as attacks on critical infrastructure, cyber attacks, information warfare and radicalization of youth. Union home minister Amit Shah said that divisive forces are still active in the country and underlined the disruptive power of disinformation, misinformation, mal-information and fake news with the help of new technology.
Speaking at the annual Intelligence Bureau endowment lecture, Shah urged the central agencies to develop an intelligence coordination strategy with friendly nations to detect anti-India organisations and networks. Shah said that in today’s era, the scope of sovereignty is no longer limited to territorial boundaries.
“We must expand the definition of security to include new dimensions. With just one click of a computer, any country’s critical and digital infrastructure can be damaged… There is a need to broaden Intelligence Bureau’s concept of security and prepare for the challenges of the future.”
Intelligence Bureau
The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s internal security and counterintelligence agency under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was founded in 1887 as the Central Special Branch. The IB is often regarded as the oldest extant intelligence organisation in the world.
Until 1968, it handled both domestic and foreign intelligence after which the Research and Analysis Wing was formed specifically for foreign intelligence; following that, the IB was primarily assigned the role of domestic intelligence and internal security. Tapan Deka is the current director of the IB, since June 2022.
