Chief of the Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, recently undertook a significant visit to forward areas in the Central Sector, focusing on the Indian Army’s operational preparedness in the strategically critical Kumaon region. His objective was to not only assess military readiness but also to motivate troops stationed in these challenging terrains and bolster civil-military relations.
During his visit, General Dwivedi inspected high-altitude posts in Pithoragarh and surrounding areas, where he received briefings on the operational posture and improvements in military capabilities. The review covered advanced surveillance systems, specialized mobility platforms, next-generation technologies, and the integration of reconnaissance, along with coordination efforts involving allied security agencies. The Army Chief recognized the professionalism, tactical innovation, and steadfast discipline exhibited by the personnel working under demanding climatic conditions and in rugged terrains.
In his interactions with soldiers stationed in remote areas, General Dwivedi praised their courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to duty, reflecting the Army’s motto of “Service Before Self.” He reassured the troops that the Army remains fully prepared to address evolving security challenges along India’s borders.
In addition to engaging with serving military personnel, the Chief met with veterans and local residents, acknowledging their contributions to the nation while extending heartfelt Diwali greetings to all ranks and their families. He highlighted the strategic significance of the Kumaon region, which shares borders with Nepal and China, and commended the local population’s strong sense of patriotism and resilience.
General Dwivedi also underscored the region’s rich martial heritage, invoking the legacy of the Kumaon Regiment. He reviewed various developmental initiatives being implemented under Operation Sadbhavna and the Vibrant Village Programme. These initiatives focus on enhancing local infrastructure, including hybrid power projects, improved road connectivity, community medical camps, and agricultural support through polyhouse initiatives. Furthermore, the promotion of eco-friendly tourism through tent-based homestays in Garbyang and Kalapani was discussed.
Emphasizing that the Indian Army’s presence in Kumaon symbolizes “strength with compassion,” General Dwivedi articulated the need to balance its operational duties in border defense with a commitment to uplifting local communities. Concluding his visit, he reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to sustaining operational excellence, enhancing civil-military cooperation, and upholding the institution’s longstanding traditions of duty, honor, and service to the nation.
