The Army has issued a serious warning to its former servicemen about the implications of spreading incorrect material on social media, which could tarnish the Army’s reputation or disrupt internal unity. The ex-servicemen were reminded of the relevant articles of the Indian Penal Code, as well as the potential consequences for their pension. Local military commanders have been directed to keep a careful eye on the situation.
Towards the end of May, the Adjutant General’s office’s Additional Director General, Discipline and Vigilance, addressed a letter to all seven Army commands, encouraging them to take necessary action. This directive has since been distributed to sites throughout the country.
What does the Letter Say?
The letter cites recent events in which the behaviour of some ex-servicemen has harmed the Army’s image. These occurrences include the use of social media to disseminate propaganda and misleading information about the Army, with a special focus on the officer cadre. The letter emphasises that certain posts are intended to provoke public opinion and address issues involving servicemen’s conditions, perks, and lifestyle.
The letter also reminds ex-servicemen of Section 131 of the Army Act of 1950, which provides for life imprisonment for anyone convicted of abetting or indulging in mutiny against an officer or a soldier. Furthermore, the local military officials have been directed to file cases with the local police in accordance with relevant parts of the Indian Penal Code. Ex-servicemen have been cautioned that pensions might be terminated if they are convicted by a court of major crimes or if a competent body finds the pensioner guilty of grave misconduct.
Finally, the Army has issued a strong warning against the spread of provocative social media messages, particularly those targeting the officer cadre. The organisation has emphasised the potential implications and asked local military commanders to take proper measures, including, if required, contacting the police. Ex-servicemen have been informed of pension restrictions and the serious consequences of such behaviour.
