In a poignant ceremony characterized by both military precision and profound emotion, the Assam Rifles laid to rest Naib Subedar Kunjabihari Singha in his native village of Madaripur, Hailakandi district. Singha, a member of the 27 Assam Rifles, passed away on May 22 in Shillong. His final rites, held on May 24, drew fellow soldiers, grieving family members, and local residents who gathered to pay their last respects.
The ceremony adhered to the time-honored traditions of the armed forces. Singha’s coffin was draped in the national tricolor and adorned with marigold garlands. A solemn procession saw uniformed personnel from the Assam Rifles carry the coffin with dignity. A ceremonial guard of honor was established as a mark of respect, with comrades standing in formation to salute their fallen comrade one last time. A simple yet dignified memorial setup, featuring a signboard that commemorated Singha’s service, was erected on the blue tarp that covered the ground.
Officials from the Assam Rifles spoke highly of Singha’s dedication and courage, highlighting his pivotal role in maintaining peace and security in one of India’s most challenging regions. The Assam Rifles, often referred to as the “Sentinels of the North East,” has an illustrious history dating back to 1835 when it was established as the Cachar Levy. Military funerals represent one of the highest honors an active service member can receive in India.
