Babcock has successfully secured a proof-of-concept contract with the UK Ministry of Defence aimed at empowering the Ukrainian Armed Forces through the ability to 3D print military equipment. This innovative collaboration will support the creation of digital drawings and computer-aided design (CAD) files, which are crucial for facilitating the printing of various equipment parts.
As the prime contractor, Babcock will partner with the UK defence technology firm QinetiQ to bring this initiative to fruition. Tom Newman, CEO of Babcock’s Land Sector, expressed a commitment to enhancing Ukraine’s operational capabilities, stating, “We aim to give Ukraine the capability to recreate the military parts that they need, where and when it really matters.” He emphasized that this development not only leverages the company’s engineering expertise but also opens up new avenues to optimize 3D printing technology.
The project will involve reverse engineering older military parts to thoroughly understand their design and function, which will be essential for on-demand digital recreation. The resulting digital files will enable Ukrainian forces to manufacture necessary parts via 3D printing during operations, thereby providing a significant advantage in maintaining their military readiness.

The context in which this contract has emerged is critical, as the Ukrainian Armed Forces face a persistent challenge in sourcing spare parts and crucial components amid ongoing conflict. The situation is particularly acute for certain military platform variants, such as the Australian version of the M113 armored fighting vehicle, which are now outdated and lack compatible spare parts that are currently in production.
The introduction of 3D printing capabilities on the battlefield holds the potential to alleviate these supply challenges, allowing Ukraine to manufacture specific components that have ceased mass production.
