British defense and aerospace company Babcock has secured a significant contract to enhance the training capabilities of the French armed forces by providing high-performance L-39 aircraft. This deal aims to bolster pilot training and testing, particularly for the French Test Pilot school (EPNER), which is responsible for instruction, evaluation, and target simulation missions for the Direction Générale de l’Armement – Essais en Vol (DGA EV), the flight testing department under France’s defense procurement and development agency.
While the financial details of the contract remain undisclosed, the implementation of L-39 aircraft will serve multiple functions within the DGA EV. These roles include adversary simulation and new as well as refresher training for servicing mechanics. The L-39 will also facilitate release flights for qualified test pilots and EPNER instructors, expanding the scope of training and operational readiness for the French armed forces.
Babcock’s Chief Executive Aviation & CEO France, Pierre Basquin, expressed optimism about the potential growth stemming from this contract. He noted that it represents the first involvement of their L-39 aircraft and opens pathways for additional opportunities, especially in operational training and international pilot instruction.
The L-39 Albatros, a trainer and light fighter jet, is manufactured by the Czech company Aero. This versatile aircraft measures 12.13 meters in length and 4.77 meters in height, with a wingspan of 9.46 meters. Depending on its configuration, it can achieve maximum speeds ranging from 620 to 750 kilometers per hour and operates within a service ceiling of 7,500 to 11,500 meters. Its endurance ranges from 2.5 hours to over 3 hours, with a capability to cover distances exceeding 1,000 kilometers.
In a previous strategic move, Babcock acquired 11 L-39 aircraft in December 2024 to expand its international fighter pilot training offerings in France. Additionally, the company enhances the training infrastructure by providing the Pilatus PC-7 MKX training aircraft to both the French Air and Space Force and the French Navy. This new contract with the French armed forces marks a significant step forward for Babcock in its mission to enhance military training across Europe.
