Canadian firm Bombardier Defense has recently introduced the Swiss Air Force’s inaugural Global 7500 long-range multimission aircraft, marking a significant step in Switzerland’s efforts to enhance its airborne capabilities. This aircraft was delivered in December 2024 and is set to be part of a broader initiative to modernize the nation’s fleet, aimed at conducting special military and federal transport missions, emergency evacuations, and humanitarian deployments.
The Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement (Armasuisse), in coordination with the Department of Defence, Civil Protection, and Sport, initiated the procurement process in 2023 as part of a strategic move to replace the aging Cessna Citation Excel 560XLs, which have been in service since 2002. The introduction of the Global 7500 is a critical step in this modernization effort.
As part of its operational setup, Bombardier has announced that the Global 7500 will be equipped with a Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS) early in the year, aligning with the Swiss defense agency’s self-protection requirements for the aircraft. MANPADS, known for its shoulder-launched surface-to-air systems, employs short-range guided missiles to counter threats, particularly from low-altitude enemy aircraft.
In preparation for the aircraft’s deployment, training for both aircrew and ground support teams will commence, ensuring they are ready for the Global 7500’s full operational capacity by the end of the year. Following its induction, the aircraft will be stationed at Payerne Air Base; after two years, it will relocate to Bern-Belp airport.
Bombardier Defense’s Sales Vice President, Stephane Leroy, remarked on the significance of this aircraft launch, highlighting the Global 7500 as a proven and versatile platform that has achieved speed records and is considered the highest performing aircraft in its category. Leroy emphasized the importance of this contract with Armasuisse, stating that it represents a notable milestone for Bombardier Defense, as it is the first Global 7500 customized for head-of-state multi-mission applications. He expressed pride in being entrusted by Armasuisse to support critical transportation and emergency missions.
The Global 7500 aircraft is an engineering marvel, measuring 111 feet (34 meters) in length and boasting a wingspan of 104 feet (32 meters). It is powered by two General Electric Passport engines, allowing it to reach speeds of up to Mach 0.925 (691 miles or 1,111 kilometers per hour). With a maximum range of 7,700 nautical miles (8,861 miles or 14,260 kilometers) and an operational altitude of up to 51,000 feet (15,544 meters), the aircraft is designed for long-distance travel. It can accommodate up to 19 passengers, has a fuel capacity of 51,503 pounds (23,361 kilograms), and boasts a payload capacity of 5,800 pounds (2,631 kilograms), further solidifying its role as a vital asset for the Swiss Air Force.
