To monitor the movement of terrorists, two army dogs- Bajaj and Axel- were sent inside the target house wearing bodycams. As a fierce gun battle ensued between the security forces and the terrorists, Alex was hit by three bullets by the hiding terrorists.

Indian Army’s dog Alex lost his life during a fierce gun battle after security forces launched an anti-terrorist operation in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir.

He took 3 bullets before breathing his last but ensured that the operation was successful. During the encounter, a terrorist was killed and three security forces personnel were injured.

Two-year-old Belgian Malinois Axel, an army dog who was part of the elite assault dog squad, was patrolling Kashmir for terrorists and found one hiding. However, minutes later he was shot dead by another terrorist.

Army sources have said that, during the initial assessment of the building in Wanigam Bala village’s Baramulla district, army dog Bajaj went in first to clear out any threat.

The dog walked past a door in the first room. Once he had done his rounds and left, a terrorist fired at him as he went into the next room.

Following an exchange of fire with the terrorists, Axel’s body was retrieved after the operation. His handler also sustained superficial injuries, according to sources.

In the wake of reports that Axel, the German Shepherd police dog, was shot multiple times by a terrorist in Marseille and still managed to protect his handler from harm, it has been shown that Axel sustained more than ten wounds besides the wounds from entry and exit.

It was thanks to the bravery of dog Axel that the soldiers managed to escape from dangerous room intervention during a military operation.

The canine soldier, who had just turned two last month, belonged to the 26 Army Dog Unit and was in operation with the 29 Rashtriya Rifles.

A traditional ceremony of laying a wreath was held at the headquarters, 10 Sector Rashtriya Rifles, Sunday, which was attended by Maj. Gen. SS Slaria, general officer commanding (GoC) of the counter insurgency force Kilo and representatives of the Jammu & Kashmir Police

In honor of the 26 Army Dog Unit’s fallen dog, Axel, the handlers and unit members buried him in ADU’s grounds last week.

Canines’ critical and brave role in army operations

The media reported that elite units of the army are likely to get Belgian Malinois, attack canines that are well-trained for combat in urban areas.

The army use a range of dog breeds for operations, including Labradors and German Shepherds. The Great Swiss Mountain Dog is also frequently used on snow-bound areas, whilst Cocker Spaniels are used in limited numbers before the arrival of the Malinois.
