British Army Receives First Ground-Based Surveillance Radar Systems from Elbit Systems UK

The British Army has marked a significant milestone in its artillery capabilities by receiving the first delivery of ground-based surveillance radar (GBSR) systems from Elbit Systems UK. This development follows successful live-fire trials conducted in early 2025.

The initial shipment consists of 55 GBSR units along with necessary support equipment, with additional units expected to arrive later in the year. The British Ministry of Defence had placed an order for a total of 90 portable radars in 2023, with an option to acquire an additional 40 units.

These systems have been specially customized to align with British military specifications and are built on an open architecture framework, ensuring adaptability and integration with existing systems. Notably, the entire manufacturing process for these radar units has taken place within the UK and Europe, underscoring a commitment to domestic production.

The GBSR performs two critical functions: surveillance and fall of shot (FoS) correction. As a surveillance tool, it excels in detecting, tracking, and classifying a wide range of objects, including personnel, vehicles, helicopters, and drones. This capability greatly enhances situational awareness for troops, providing vital data on both friendly movements and potential threats.

Additionally, the FoS correction feature assists mortar and artillery units by accurately identifying impact points, enabling quick and precise adjustments to fire. This capability is crucial for increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of military operations on the battlefield.

Martin Fausset, CEO of Elbit Systems UK, expressed optimism about the program, noting that it exemplifies the collaborative efforts between their Bristol team and the customer to create a tailored capability that meets the evolving requirements of the armed forces. This initiative demonstrates a proactive approach to enhancing the operational capacity of the British Army in an increasingly complex battlefield environment.
