British Forces Intercept Sanctioned Russian Oil Tanker in English Channel

British forces have successfully intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker linked to Russia’s shadow fleet in the English Channel, marking a significant operation in the UK’s ongoing efforts to enforce sanctions against Russia. The interception was confirmed by the British defense ministry, which detailed that the operation was the first of its kind led by UK forces.

The tanker, identified as SMYRTOS, was boarded by Royal Marine Commandos alongside specially trained law enforcement officers from the National Crime Agency. This joint operation aimed to disrupt Russia’s attempts to circumvent sanctions imposed due to its ongoing military aggression in Ukraine. The ministry’s statement highlighted that despite efforts by Russia to avoid detection and continue supporting its military operations, British forces successfully carried out the mission.

Following the interception, the SMYRTOS is set to be relocated to an anchorage off the southern coast of England. Once there, it will be monitored closely, further underscoring the UK’s commitment to enforcing international sanctions and curtailing resources that could be utilized by Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. This operation showcases the collaborative efforts of military and law enforcement agencies to uphold international law and support global peace initiatives.
