Bulgarian Air Force Receives First F-16 Viper Combat Aircraft from Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin has successfully delivered the Bulgarian Air Force’s first F-16 Viper to Graf Ignatievo, Maritsa, marking a significant milestone in Bulgaria’s military modernization efforts. This transition is part of the US foreign military sales agreements finalized by Bulgaria in 2019 and 2022, under which Sofia aims to acquire a total of 16 fourth-generation fighter jets to replace its aging fleet of Soviet-built MiG-29 Fulcrums.

The delivery of the aircraft was a coordinated operation completed in two phases. The first leg of the journey involved transporting the aircraft from Greenville, South Carolina, across the Atlantic to Spain, followed by its final leg to Bulgaria. Adhering to international aviation regulations, the aircraft initially bore US Air Force insignia during its transit. Upon landing in Maritsa, this insignia was replaced, officially designating the F-16 as part of the Bulgarian Air Force.

In addition to this inaugural delivery, Bulgaria anticipates the arrival of seven more F-16 airframes by the end of this year. Notably, one of these jets is currently stationed in the United States to facilitate training for Bulgarian technicians and engineers in preparation for the full integration of the fleet. By 2027, Lockheed Martin is scheduled to deliver an additional eight Vipers, at which point the Bulgarian Air Force plans to establish a new squadron dedicated to the operation and management of these advanced aircraft.

The event in Maritsa showcased the significance of this acquisition for Bulgaria’s military capabilities. Bulgarian Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov expressed optimism, stating, “For the Air Force, this means a new era in their development. Our Air Force combat aviation has a future, because they already have a new type of aircraft, which will be in operation in the next 30-40 years. And this, I am convinced, will motivate the personnel to serve with much greater desire and with great prospects.”

The F-16 Viper, part of Lockheed Martin’s Block 70/72 variant, represents an advanced evolution of the renowned Fighting Falcon model. This modern aircraft is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to effectively counter contemporary threats and rival the capabilities of fifth-generation fighter jets. Measuring 50 feet (15 meters) in length with a wingspan of 31 feet (9 meters), it can be powered by either Pratt & Whitney or General Electric engines.

Fitted with advanced radar and an electronic warfare suite, the F-16 Viper can deploy multi-domain missiles, guided and unguided munitions, and optional nuclear munitions. With an operational range of 2,450 miles (3,942 kilometers), it achieves speeds of up to Mach 2 (1,534 miles/2,470 kilometers per hour) and boasts a service ceiling of 55,000 feet (16,764 meters). This advanced aircraft is expected to enhance Bulgaria’s defense capabilities and contribute to regional security as part of NATO’s collective efforts.
