Cambodia Remains on High Alert Amid Ongoing Border Dispute with Thailand

Cambodia has heightened military readiness and imposed a ban on Thai dramas on television amidst escalating tensions with Thailand. This decision comes as diplomatic meetings are scheduled to address the ongoing border disputes following violent incidents that marked a recent flare-up on May 28. The clashes occurred in the Emerald Triangle, a region where the borders of Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos converge, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

In a declaration underscoring the seriousness of the situation, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced via Facebook that all internet connections routed through Thailand would be severed, leading to reports of slower internet speeds for some users in Cambodia. Furthermore, the ministries of information and culture have instructed local television stations and cinemas to cease broadcasting Thai television series, signaling a broader cultural embargo.

Former Prime Minister Hun Sen, who is also Hun Manet’s father, expressed strong sentiments towards the situation, urging measures against Thai imports if the neighboring country did not alleviate restrictions placed on border crossings. He emphasized the importance of military preparedness, instructing armed forces to remain vigilant 24 hours a day to safeguard national security.

In response to the escalation, Cambodia has also announced the indefinite closure of the Daung-Ban Laem border crossing, which authorities claim is a necessary precaution for public safety. Hun Sen further extended his rhetoric to encourage protests among Thai farmers against their military leadership, reflecting a desire for solidarity against perceived military overreach.

The diplomatic meeting set to occur in Phnom Penh is intended to resolve the border tensions that have plagued relations between the two countries for years. This conflict is rooted in historical disputes over the delineation of the 800-kilometer (500-mile) border, primarily established during the French colonial era in Indochina. Sporadic incidences of violence have been reported since 2008, resulting in a significant death toll.

Hun Manet has announced plans for Cambodia to pursue legal action through the International Court of Justice (ICJ) concerning four disputed border regions, including areas linked to the recent skirmish. The ICJ had previously ruled in favor of Cambodia regarding territory near the Preah Vihear temple in 2013; however, Thailand has expressed that it does not acknowledge the ICJ’s authority in such matters.

Recent decisions made by Thailand, including the tightening of border controls and closure of certain crossing points, have further exacerbated tensions leading up to the scheduled talks. Both nations’ military forces have recently come to an agreement to reposition troops in contentious areas to avoid additional conflict as diplomatic discussions unfold.
