Canada Signs $1.15 Billion Contract Amendments with Lockheed Martin for CC-130J Hercules Fleet Upgrades

Canada has made significant strides in enhancing its military capabilities, recently finalizing contract amendments totaling $1.15 billion with Lockheed Martin. These contracts primarily focus on renewing maintenance and upgrade support for the Royal Canadian Air Forceโ€™s (RCAF) CC-130J Hercules fleet.

The initial contract amendment is valued at $462.5 million and extends in-service support for the CC-130J Hercules through June 2029. This agreement encompasses essential maintenance, repair, and overhaul operations, which will be executed by Lockheed Martin and its subcontractors at various facilities in both Canada and the United States, including Trenton, Ontario. As part of this agreement, approximately 620 Canadian jobs will be created or sustained.

In addition, the second amendment, worth $684.3 million, is dedicated to the integration of what is known as the RCAF 105 upgrades across the entire fleet. These upgrades are designed to enhance the capabilities of the Canadian Armed Forces by introducing new technologies aimed at improving air traffic management efficiency and safety. Key areas of enhancement include updated navigation, communication, flight management systems, and avionics, all of which are vital for compliance with both civil and military airspace regulations. This segment of the project is expected to provide support for an additional 525 jobs in Canada.

Highlighting the importance of the CC-130J Hercules to Canada’s military operations, Canadian Minister of National Defence David J. McGuinty remarked, โ€œThe CC-130J Hercules is a critical part of the Canadian Armed Forcesโ€™ transport fleet. These contract amendments will help ensure the aircraft remains operational and mission-ready for years to come, while supporting skilled jobs and industrial expertise across Canada.โ€

Currently, the RCAF operates a fleet of 17 CC-130J aircraft, which are integral for transporting troops, supplies, and equipment not only within Canada but also internationally, supporting a wide range of operations. The procurement of these aircraft was initiated under a $1.44 billion contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in December 2007, intended to replace older variants of the Hercules.

The CC-130J model, recognized as the most advanced within the C-130 family, boasts impressive specifications, including turboprop engines, a glass cockpit, and advanced digital avionics that enhance its range, payload capacity, and reliability. Specifically, the aircraft can carry up to 21,183 kilograms (46,700 pounds) of payload, features an operational range of 6,852 kilometers (4,257 miles), and can reach speeds of up to 660 kilometers (410 miles) per hour.

With these new contracts in place, Canada aims to bolster its military readiness and operational effectiveness through the sustained support and modernization of its air transport capabilities.
