Canada Signs Contract to Modernize Portuguese P-3C Orion Aircraft

Canada has entered into a significant government-to-government agreement with Portugal to modernize five P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft belonging to the Portuguese Air Force. This initiative is being managed by the Canadian Commercial Corporation and involves a financial commitment of 39 million Canadian dollars, approximately 28.7 million U.S. dollars.

The modernization effort will be carried out by General Dynamics Mission Systems (GDMS) Canada, aimed at extending the operational lifespan of the aircraft while enhancing Portugal’s contributions to NATO missions. This recent deal builds upon a previous modernization agreement from 2022, which focused on Portugal’s initial fleet of P-3C Orions. The current program is projected to create up to 50 job opportunities within Canada’s defense and aerospace sectors.

The P-3C Orion is an essential platform for maritime patrol operations, enabling capabilities such as anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance, and search and rescue missions across the Atlantic Ocean. Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu emphasized that this project underscores the strengthening defense relationship between Canada and Portugal.

“This modernization initiative deepens our bilateral trade and defense relationship while advancing Canada’s commitment to closer cooperation with European Allies,” Sidhu noted. He highlighted the importance of Canadian expertise and innovation in bolstering transatlantic supply chain resilience and fostering economic cooperation that contributes to stability and prosperity across the Atlantic.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the P-3C Orion is a robust aircraft with a length of 116 feet (35 meters) and a wingspan of 100 feet (30 meters), capable of accommodating up to 11 personnel. The aircraft can be armed with a variety of weapons, including air-to-surface missiles, anti-ship missiles, depth charges, cluster bombs, naval mines, and torpedoes.

Equipped with four Allison T56 turboprop engines, each generating 4,910 horsepower, the P-3C Orion boasts four-bladed Hamilton reversible propellers. The aircraft is capable of reaching maximum speeds of 411 knots (approximately 473 miles per hour) and has a range of 1,345 nautical miles (about 2,490 kilometers), with a service ceiling of 28,300 feet (8,626 meters). This modernization is expected to ensure the P-3C Orion remains a vital asset for Portugal’s maritime security and NATO operations in the years to come.
