Captain Deepak Singh, an officer from the Indian Army’s Corps of Signals, tragically sacrificed his life during a counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting an exceptional story of bravery and commitment to duty. Serving with the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, he lost his life on August 14, 2024, at the age of 25. His remarkable heroism was recognized posthumously when he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, India’s third-highest peacetime gallantry award.
Born in 1999 in Almora district, Uttarakhand, Deepak Singh grew up in a household that cherished values such as duty, integrity, and patriotism, influenced by his father, a police officer, and his mother, who instilled strong family principles. Alongside his two elder sisters, Deepak fostered an early interest in both academics and athletics, particularly hockey, which cultivated resilience and teamwork. Driven to serve the nation, he pursued his dream of joining the Indian Army through the Technical Entry Scheme (TES-35) and successfully completed rigorous training at the Officers Training Academy in Gaya. In June 2020, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the Corps of Signals, marking the start of his esteemed military journey.
Deepak Singh was later assigned to the 48 Rashtriya Rifles, where he quickly earned a reputation for his calm demeanor and sharp tactical skills during operations in Jammu and Kashmir. On August 13, 2024, he received credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the Shivgarh-Assar forest area of Doda district. Leading two teams from his unit into the dense and treacherous terrain, he exhibited sound judgment in establishing a vantage point to monitor activities in the area.
As dusk fell, he spotted suspicious movements and took decisive action to engage the terrorists. Throughout the night, he maintained pressure on the adversaries, showcasing relentless dedication. The situation escalated in the early hours of August 14 when an injured terrorist, concealed amid boulders, opened fire on the advancing troops. In a heroic act, Captain Singh pushed a fellow soldier to safety, exposing himself to enemy fire and sustaining multiple gunshot wounds in the process.
Despite his injuries, he demonstrated extraordinary valor by confronting the terrorist, skillfully neutralizing the threat and securing the safety of his team. Unfortunately, Captain Deepak Singh succumbed to his injuries later that day, cementing his legacy within the finest traditions of the Indian Army.
In recognition of his bravery, the Government of India announced the award of the Shaurya Chakra on Republic Day 2025, with the formal presentation occurring during the Defence Investiture Ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on May 23, 2025. His parents were present to receive the honor on his behalf, and his sacrifice was acknowledged by national leaders, including Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who called him a proud son of the state.
