CBI Files Case Against Former Coast Guard Chief K. Natarajan for Alleged Tampering of Officer Performance Reports

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a formal inquiry against former Indian Coast Guard Director-General K. Natarajan and unnamed individuals for allegedly tampering with the Annual Confidential Reports (ACRs) of senior officers. This action follows preliminary findings that indicated possible irregularities in the evaluation and documentation procedures concerning the performance reports of these officers.

Natarajan, who entered service in 1984, assumed the role of Director-General of the Indian Coast Guard in 2019. Over his career, he has held several prominent positions within the organization and has commanded a variety of vessel classes, including Advanced Offshore Patrol Vessels (AOPVs), Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs), and Inshore Patrol Vessels (IPVs). His leadership was particularly notable in the wake of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, during which he was tasked with overseeing critical operational and administrative expansions within the Coast Guard.

Following his retirement two years ago, Natarajan was appointed as the Executive Director of the Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (ReCAAP) Information Sharing Centre in Singapore. His extensive contributions to enhancing coastal security, maritime safety, and port operations in India have drawn on his training received at the US Coast Guard Reserve Training Centre in Yorktown, Virginia.

The allegations against Natarajan and others focus on the purported falsification or manipulation of ACRs, which play a significant role in determining the performance and suitability of officers for future promotions, postings, and career advancements. The CBI’s complaint suggests that during Natarajan’s leadership, certain performance records of senior officers were improperly altered, potentially hampering their professional development.

As the investigation continues, further specifics regarding the probe have not been disclosed. The CBI is expected to interview various individuals connected to the case and examine official documents to determine the full scope of the alleged misconduct. If Natarajan and any accomplices are found to have engaged in wrongdoing, they could face serious legal and administrative repercussions under applicable laws.

At this time, neither Natarajan nor any representatives have issued a public statement regarding the allegations. Updates to the story are anticipated as new information becomes available.
