Centre Relocates 2,000 BSF Personnel From Odisha To Enhance Security In J-K

In a swift response to recent terror attacks, the government has ordered the relocation of over 2,000 BSF personnel from Odisha to the volatile Jammu and Kashmir region along the India-Pakistan border, sources said on Saturday. This strategic move aims to bolster security and counter the escalating threats in the Union Territory.

The two battalions extracted from Odisha were previously engaged in anti-Naxal operations, and now they will fortify the defenses in the terror-stricken Jammu region. The Centre’s move comes days after Director General of the BSF Nitin Agrawal on July 21 reviewed the operational readiness of the troops deployed at the Jammu International Border.

BSF chief’s visit was scheduled a day after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the functioning of Multi Agency Centre (MAC) of the Intelligence Bureau, directing agencies to increase engagement in the MAC and make a cohesive platform as well as to adopt a whole-of-the government approach towards national security.

Rifleman Mohit Rathor was killed and a Major along with three other soldiers were wounded in an unprovoked attack by Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) on an Indian forward post early Saturday during an operation against a group of terrorists attempting to cross the LoC at Kamkari in Machhal sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. In the counterfire from the Indian side, a Pakistani intruder was killed. This attack raises the military toll in terrorist violence in J&K to 12 this month.

BAT, composed of Pakistani military personnel and terrorists, frequently provides cover fire for intruders attempting to cross the heavily guarded LoC, according to official sources. According to sources, a group of around 40 to 50 Pakistani terrorists are reportedly hiding in the upper reaches of the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir, prompting security forces to launch massive counter-terror operations in these areas to catch them. These terrorists, who have managed to infiltrate the region, are highly trained and equipped with some of the most modern and sophisticated weapons, including American-made M4 Carbine Rifles fitted with night vision devices, sources said.
