Chinese Scientists Simulate First ‘Triple-Nuke-Strike’ in Lab

A team of scientists from the Chinese army conducted a laboratory simulation to investigate the implications of three nuclear warheads detonating at the same location in rapid succession. This experiment, spearheaded by Xu Xiaohui, an associate professor in Nanjing, sought to enhance understanding of the destructive potential of multiple nuclear strikes.

The research was modeled after the US Palanquin experiment conducted in 1965, which involved a single nuclear explosion with an equivalent yield of 4.3 kilotons, detonated at a depth of approximately 85 meters (or 279 feet). By simulating a triple-strike scenario, the team aimed to analyze how successive nuclear blasts would impact the surrounding environment compared to the original single-event benchmark.

The results of the simulation showcased significant changes to the explosion’s aftermath. The team found that the crater created by the triple strike was more than double the size of that produced by a single blast. Specifically, the radius of the crater expanded from 46 meters (151 feet) to an impressive 114 meters (374 feet). In addition to this, the depth of the resulting crater also increased, from 28 meters (92 feet) following the single blast to 35 meters (115 feet) after the triple detonation.

These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the consequences of nuclear weapons usage, potentially informing military strategy and policy. The implications of such research raise significant concerns regarding nuclear proliferation and global security. The simulation marks a notable milestone in military nuclear research, as scientists continue to explore the complexities and devastating impacts of nuclear warfare.
