Collins Aerospace has been awarded an $80 million contract aimed at upgrading the avionics system of the U.S. Army’s Black Hawk helicopters. The project will be executed across three locations in Alabama and Iowa, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the technological capabilities of this critical military asset.

At the heart of this upgrade is the Mosarc system, which is engineered to streamline technology integration and help reduce sustainment costs over the helicopters’ operational lifespan. This initiative not only focuses on the Black Hawk helicopters but also aspires to standardize avionics systems throughout the Army’s fleet of manned and unmanned aircraft. Jenny Miller, the Vice President and General Manager of Military Avionics and Helicopters at Collins Aerospace, emphasized the importance of the Mosarc system. The Mosarc avionics platform is characterized by its modular design, featuring display, network, computing, and software components that can be tailored according to the specific needs of various rotary-wing fleets. In recent months, the U.S. Army has focused on enhancing the capabilities of its Black Hawk fleet through various integrations. For instance, in February, the Army conducted a test on a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter equipped with the T901 engine, which aims to boost the helicopter’s endurance and payload capacity. Furthermore, last December, the U.S. Marine Corps announced plans to test autonomous flight capabilities with Black Hawk helicopters throughout the current year. This initiative, which involves the integration of Sikorsky’s MATRIX flight autonomy system, will assess the aircraft’s ability to conduct resupply missions from naval fleets and ground bases, showcasing the ongoing efforts to enhance the operational efficiency and versatility of Black Hawk helicopters.
