A member of the Brigade of the Guards, he commanded the 21st Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles (21 RR), earning multiple accolades for his courage during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir. On May 2, 2020, Colonel Sharma made the ultimate sacrifice while leading a challenging operation in Handwara, Kupwara district, illustrating the essence of true military leadership by placing the safety of civilians and his troops above his own life.
Born on July 3, 1975, in Parwana village of Bulandshahr district, Uttar Pradesh, Colonel Sharma grew up in a family that prioritized discipline and public service. His father was a soil conservation officer, and his mother instilled in him the values of dedication and perseverance. From a young age, he was determined to serve in the armed forces, illustrating his resolute spirit as he pursued this goal despite facing numerous obstacles.
Colonel Sharma’s journey to the Indian Army was marked by resilience. He tackled the UPSC written examinations on multiple occasions but faced hurdles at the Services Selection Board interviews. After six-and-a-half years of relentless effort, he succeeded on his 13th attempt, being commissioned into the Indian Army on September 1, 2001, through the Short Service Commission (SSC-72) course at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. His military career began in the 19th Battalion of the Brigade of the Guards and showcased a steadfast commitment to service.
Through nearly two decades of dedicated service, Colonel Sharma established himself as a skilled officer, particularly in counter-insurgency and internal security operations. His deployments in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the treacherous Rajwar forest, underscored his tactical acumen and ability to make calm decisions under pressure. By 2020, he had achieved the rank of Colonel, commanding the 21st Battalion in one of the nation’s most sensitive areas. His inclination to lead from the front endeared him to his troops and established a high standard of military leadership.
Colonel Sharma’s record of gallantry is unmatched, with three Sena Medals to his name—an honor that only a few officers achieve. His first medal was awarded on January 26, 2018, for exceptional courage during counter-insurgency operations. The first bar to the Sena Medal came on August 15, 2019, after he neutralized a terrorist armed with a concealed grenade, thereby preventing potential casualties among his troops and police personnel. His final recognition, a second posthumous bar to the Sena Medal, was awarded on January 26, 2021, for his leadership and ultimate sacrifice during the Handwara operation.
The significant events of May 1-2, 2020, in Handwara marked a pivotal moment in Colonel Sharma’s career. Following intelligence reports of terrorist activity in the Wadarbala-Rajwar forests, a coordinated operation involving the 21 RR, Central Reserve Police Force, and Jammu and Kashmir Police was initiated. Intelligence later indicated that terrorists had taken civilians hostage in Chanjimulla village. Colonel Sharma led a cordon-and-search operation to neutralize this imminent threat.
During the ensuing fierce encounter, security forces faced heavy automatic fire even as they successfully evacuated civilians. Demonstrating unparalleled leadership, Colonel Sharma remained in the thick of the battle, guiding his men. Although two terrorists were eliminated, the operation took a grim turn, resulting in fatal injuries to Colonel Sharma and several others, including Major Anuj Sood and Sub-Inspector Shakeel Qazi.
His funeral on May 5, 2020, in Jaipur, was attended by senior military officials, dignitaries, and citizens who gathered to pay tribute to a hero. Colonel Sharma is survived by his wife, Pallavi Sharma, their daughter, Tamanna, and his parents, who continue to honor his legacy as both a courageous officer and a devoted family man.
