Telangana Formation Day 2026
Telangana Formation Day is observed annually on 2 June to commemorate the creation of Telangana as a separate state of India. In 2026, the state celebrated its 12th Foundation Day, marking twelve years since its official formation on 2 June 2014. Telangana became the 29th state of India after being carved out of the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
The demand for a separate Telangana has deep historical roots. Before Independence, the region was part of the Hyderabad State ruled by the Nizams. India Strengthens Defence Exports with BrahMos Missile Agreements
India’s growing stature as a defence exporter received a major boost as Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed that Vietnam has signed an agreement to procure the BrahMos missile system. He also stated that discussions with Indonesia regarding a similar deal have reached an advanced stage.

Ministry of Jal Shakti and ISRO Join Hands for Water Research
The Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 1 June 2026 in New Delhi to enhance water resource management through the use of space technology and satellite-based applications.
The agreement was signed during a national workshop on research and development in the water sector held at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre. Under the partnership, the Department of Water Resources and ISRO will collaborate on 24 research themes related to water conservation and management.
The areas of cooperation include reservoir monitoring, river flow analysis, water-spread mapping, satellite-based water quality assessment, and studies on the distribution of macroplastics in water bodies. These projects aim to improve decision-making through advanced remote sensing and geospatial technologies.
During the workshop, the government also launched the Mission for Advancement in High-Impact Areas for Water (MAHA on Water). The initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation. Additionally, an innovation call was announced for startups and MSMEs under the Bharat Water Innovation Network platform to encourage technological solutions in the water sector.
Mesalina Bishnoi: A New Lizard Species Discovered in India
Scientists have officially identified a new species of lizard named Mesalina bishnoi, marking the first confirmed record of the genus Mesalina in India. The discovery was formally announced on 1 June 2026 following detailed scientific studies conducted in Rajasthan.
The species was discovered near Gajner in Bikaner district, located within the semi-desert landscape of western Rajasthan. Researchers carried out extensive morphological examinations and genetic analyses, confirming that the specimen represented a previously unknown species belonging to the Mesalina watsonana species complex.
Mesalina bishnoi is a small lizard measuring approximately 39.2 millimetres from snout to vent. It displays a greyish to olive-brown coloration with distinctive stripes and body markings that help distinguish it from related species.

Indian Teen Innovators Win Earth Prize 2026
Three Indian students—Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal, and Avyana Mehta—have achieved international recognition by becoming the first global winners of The Earth Prize 2026. The young innovators were honoured for developing “Plas-Stick,” an environmentally friendly solution designed to remove microplastics from water.
Plas-Stick is produced from tamarind seed waste and works by attracting microplastic particles suspended in water. These particles clump together and can subsequently be removed using a handheld magnet. The process is cost-effective, does not require electricity, and is particularly suitable for rural and resource-constrained communities.
The project demonstrates how agricultural waste can be transformed into a practical tool for environmental protection. During development, the students collaborated with experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati to refine their innovation.
As regional winners for Asia, the team received a grant of 12,500 US dollars from The Earth Prize. Beyond the scientific achievement, the initiative has also generated widespread awareness, engaging thousands of students and educators in discussions about plastic pollution and water conservation.
