Indian-Origin Scientist Honoured with Crafoord Prize 2026
Renowned Indian-origin atmospheric scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan has been awarded the Crafoord Prize 2026, one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions in the field of geosciences. Often referred to as the “Nobel of Earth Sciences”, the prize acknowledges his groundbreaking contributions to climate science over nearly five decades.
Born and educated in southern India, Ramanathan began his academic journey in engineering in Bengaluru before pursuing advanced studies in the United States. During the 1970s, while working at NASA’s Langley Research Center, he made a transformative discovery—chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), commonly used in refrigeration and aerosols, have an exceptionally high heat-trapping capacity.
His landmark 1975 research paper published in Science demonstrated that even a single molecule of CFC could contribute thousands of times more to global warming than carbon dioxide. This finding fundamentally altered scientific understanding of climate change by proving that gases other than CO₂ could significantly influence Earth’s temperature, shaping global environmental policy and climate research thereafter.
Asian Rifle & Pistol Shooting Championships 2026 Begins in New Delhi
The Asian Rifle and Pistol Shooting Championships 2026 commenced at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges in New Delhi, drawing elite shooters from across the continent. This prestigious two-week event is regarded as one of Asia’s most important shooting competitions.
The championship offers athletes a crucial platform to assess their performance against top competitors, improve international rankings, and gain global exposure. It also plays a key role in identifying future Olympic and world-level medal contenders. The 2026 edition highlights Asia’s rising standards in shooting sports and reflects the depth of talent across age groups and categories.
NSO Announces Nationwide Migration Survey
The National Statistics Office (NSO) has announced a countrywide Survey on Migration, scheduled to be conducted from July 2026 to June 2027. With increasing urbanisation, labour mobility, and seasonal migration across states, the government aims to generate updated and comprehensive data on internal migration trends.
The survey will examine the scale, patterns, and causes of migration, along with migrants’ employment profiles. Special focus will be placed on temporary, circular, and seasonal migration, which remains largely underreported despite its importance to India’s informal economy.
The most recent migration data comes from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) 2020–21, which reported an overall migration rate of 28.9%. Post-pandemic economic shifts have made updated data essential for effective policy formulation.
Kabak Yano Scales Western Hemisphere’s Highest Peak
Indian mountaineer Kabak Yano successfully climbed Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, marking a major achievement in her 7-Summit Expedition. Standing at 22,831 feet, Aconcagua is the highest mountain in South America, the Western Hemisphere, and the tallest peak outside Asia.
Located in the Andes mountain range, the climb is known for its extreme weather conditions and physical challenges. Yano’s accomplishment highlights India’s growing presence in global mountaineering and endurance sports.
India and United States Announce Trade Deal
On 2 February 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that India and the United States had reached a significant trade agreement following a direct conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under the proposed deal, the U.S. will reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, while India will work towards eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers on American products.
The agreement also includes India’s commitment to substantially increase imports from the U.S., reportedly exceeding $500 billion, covering sectors such as energy, technology, agriculture, coal, and other strategic goods. The deal aims to strengthen bilateral economic ties and boost trade volumes between the two nations.
Exercise KHANJAR-XIII
Exercise KHANJAR-XIII, the 13th edition of the annual joint Special Forces exercise between India and Kyrgyzstan, will be conducted from 4 to 17 February 2026 at Misamari, Assam.
Initiated in 2011, the exercise focuses on enhancing interoperability, joint tactical drills, and mutual understanding between the armed forces of both countries. Misamari’s diverse terrain provides realistic combat training conditions, especially for counter-terrorism and special operations.
IHMCL and NFSU Sign MoU on Cyber Security
The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) to strengthen cyber security and data protection in national highway operations.
The agreement focuses on cyber forensics, digital evidence integrity, research, training, and consultancy. With the introduction of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, highways are becoming fully digital, handling vast amounts of sensitive data such as toll transactions, vehicle movement, surveillance feeds, and traffic analytics.
NFSU will provide technical expertise in cyber investigation and capacity building, ensuring secure and efficient functioning of India’s digital highway infrastructure.
