COP31 2026

The 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is scheduled to take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to 20, 2026.

The conference will bring together delegates from almost all countries to discuss international measures related to climate-change mitigation, adaptation, climate finance and implementation of the Paris Agreement.

COP31 will also include CMP21, the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, and CMA8, the eighth session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement.

Murat Kurum, Türkiye’s Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, will serve as the President of COP31.

Chris Bowen, Australia’s Minister for Climate Change and Energy, will chair the official climate negotiations. This arrangement follows an agreement between Türkiye and Australia after both countries had sought to host COP31.

A major focus of COP31 will be the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to strengthen the global response to climate change, keep the rise in global temperatures below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C.

India previously hosted COP8 in New Delhi in 2002. During that conference, the Delhi Ministerial Declaration was adopted, highlighting sustainable development and implementation of climate commitments while recognising the differing capacities of developed and developing countries. G7 Agrees to Release 100 Million Barrels of Oil

The Group of Seven (G7) agreed on 2 October 2026 to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products from emergency reserves.

The coordinated release involves Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, along with the European Union. The operation is being managed through the International Energy Agency (IEA).

The G7 is an intergovernmental forum comprising seven advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. The European Union also participates in its meetings.

Strategic petroleum reserves are government-maintained stocks of crude oil and petroleum products. Countries can use these reserves during supply disruptions caused by market shocks, wars, sanctions or transportation bottlenecks.

The International Energy Agency was established in 1974 following the oil crisis and is headquartered in Paris, France. It coordinates emergency oil-stock releases among member states and monitors global oil supply, demand and stock levels.

The G7 also pledged not to impose export restrictions on energy and energy products among its members. The release was planned over a period of four months, with the initial phase focusing on a front-loaded diesel release during the first 20 days.
